630nm vs 660nm Red Light: Absorption, Depth and the Research
630 nm and 660 nm are both visible red light, 30 nm apart, inside the band most red light research uses. In the 630nm vs 660nm question, 660 nm loses less light to blood and skin pigment and reaches a fraction of a millimetre further, while each band has its own trials. This article covers the absorption peaks, depth, which studies used which band, why 630 to 635 nm also appears in photodynamic therapy, and how to use both on one panel.
What is the difference between 630 nm and 660 nm red light?
Colour, absorption and research history. 630 nm is an orange-red and 660 nm a deeper red that is absorbed slightly less on its way into the skin, and each has been tested in different trials.
Our red light therapy wavelength chart sets both against the wider spectrum.
| 630 nm | 660 nm | |
|---|---|---|
| Colour | Orange-red | Deep red |
| Nearest absorption peak in cells | Just above the red peak at about 614 to 624 nm | Just below the far-red peak at about 668 to 684 nm |
| Absorption by oxygenated haemoglobin | About 1.9 times that at 660 nm | Lower |
| Absorption by melanin | About 18% more than at 660 nm | Lower |
| Reach into skin | Mostly absorbed within the skin | Mostly absorbed within the skin, a fraction of a millimetre further |

Is 630 nm red light or infrared?
630 nm is visible red light, not infrared. Both 630 and 660 nm sit in the red band, which is why you can see them, while the panel's 810 to 1060 nm channels are invisible.
One review of the field places the red light that has "shown positive results" at 600 to 700 nm and near-infrared at 770 to 1,200 nm, and calls the band in between "likely to be disappointing". AIMS Biophysics, 2017
Where do 630 nm and 660 nm sit on the absorption peaks?
On either side of two neighbouring peaks. In cell experiments the red peak fell between 613.5 and 623.5 nm and the far-red peak between 667.5 and 683.7 nm, so 630 nm sits just above one and 660 nm just below the other.
Those ranges come from human cells lit with single wavelengths from 580 to 860 nm, with responses such as DNA synthesis mapped against wavelength. Photomedicine and Laser Surgery, 2005 The popular shorthand of 620, 680, 760 and 820 nm is a rounding of its four active regions. The absorbing molecule is thought to be cytochrome c oxidase: a later review notes that Karu, who led that work, proposed that "the action spectrum of PBM effects matched the absorption spectrum of CCO". AIMS Biophysics, 2017 These were cells in a dish, not skin.
Our reading of those numbers: neither 630 nor 660 nm is "the" peak. Each sits on a slope, and because an LED's output spreads over a few tens of nanometres, a 630 nm LED reaches onto the 620 nm peak and a 660 nm LED onto the 680 nm peak. 670 nm falls inside the far-red range.
Does 660 nm penetrate deeper than 630 nm?
Yes, slightly. 660 nm is absorbed less by blood and by melanin, so it travels a fraction of a millimetre further, but both are absorbed mostly within the skin.
Haemoglobin makes the largest difference, as the standard reference table shows (values in cm⁻¹/M). Oregon Medical Laser Center, 1998
| Wavelength | Oxygenated haemoglobin | Deoxygenated haemoglobin |
|---|---|---|
| 630 nm | 610 | 5148.8 |
| 660 nm | 319.6 | 3226.56 |
| 670 nm | 294 | 2795.12 |
| 850 nm | 1058 | 691.32 |
By our arithmetic, oxygenated haemoglobin absorbs about 1.9 times as strongly at 630 nm as at 660 nm, and deoxygenated haemoglobin about 1.6 times. Absorption keeps falling to 670 nm. From a published formula for melanosome absorption in skin, melanin absorbs about 18% more at 630 nm than at 660 nm, and about 24% more than at 670 nm. Oregon Medical Laser Center, 1998 The page notes that melanin concentration in melanosomes can vary about tenfold, so only the shape of the curve carries over.
In skin samples from surgical patients, the epidermis had an absorption coefficient of 0.94 per millimetre at 632 nm and 0.72 at 694 nm, and both reached "into the deeper part of dermis layer". Journal of Biomedical Optics, 2020 660 nm sits between those two. Both reds are absorbed mostly within the first 2 to 3 mm of skin, and they differ by a fraction of a millimetre. For tissue below the skin the tool is near-infrared, as set out in 660nm vs 850nm.
What is 630nm red light good for?
In research, mainly facial skin. Trials at 630 to 633 nm, alone or with near-infrared, have measured wrinkles, elasticity, texture and acne spots.
- Wrinkles and elasticity at 633 nm: a double-blind, sham-controlled trial of 76 people compared 633 nm, 830 nm, both together and sham. All three light groups improved, and collagen and elastic fibres increased. Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology B, 2007
- Texture and collagen at 611 to 650 nm: a controlled trial of 136 people, 113 treated and 23 controls, used lamps emitting 611 to 650 nm or a broad 570 to 850 nm. Complexion, skin feel and measured roughness improved, and collagen density on ultrasound rose compared with controls. The broad band showed no advantage over red alone. Photomedicine and Laser Surgery, 2014 Its red band, 611 to 650 nm, sits in the red range between 630 and 660 nm, centred nearer 630.
- Crow's feet at 630 nm with 850 nm: a double-blind, sham-controlled trial of 60 adults used a home LED mask at 630 and 850 nm, each at most 10 mW/cm². After 12 weeks an independent rater found the crow's-feet grade improved by at least one point in 86.2% of the active group and 16.7% of the sham group. Medicine, 2025
- Acne spots at 630 nm: in a 28-person split-face trial with a 630 nm laser, lesion counts on the treated side fell from 27.7 to 6.3 over 12 sessions. Indian Journal of Dermatology, 2012
660 nm has the larger body of research overall, but 630 nm has its own sham-controlled facial trials.
What has 660 nm been tested for?
Facial wrinkles and muscle strength, among other things. It is the red wavelength with the most studies behind it.
- Wrinkles around the eyes: a split-face trial of 137 women compared 660 nm red with 590 nm amber. Wrinkle volume fell 31.6% with red and 29.9% with amber. Photobiomodulation, Photomedicine, and Laser Surgery, 2023
- Wrinkles over 12 weeks: a double-blind trial of 52 women compared a 660 nm LED with a white LED. Both groups improved, and the women rated red higher. Dermatologic Surgery, 2017
- Muscle: in a placebo-controlled crossover trial of 10 men, 660 nm laser light before exercise raised peak biceps force 12.14% above placebo, and 830 nm 14.49%, with no significant difference between them. Lasers in Medical Science, 2012
- Hair at 655 nm, the neighbour of 660: in a double-blind, sham-controlled trial of 47 women with pattern hair loss, a laser and LED helmet worn for 25 minutes every other day for 16 weeks raised hair counts by 48.07%, against 11.05% with the sham. Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, 2014
Is 630 nm or 660 nm better for skin?
Neither has been shown to beat the other. Both have controlled facial trials, and where nearby reds were compared at the same dose they behaved alike.
The closest comparisons are in animals. In rats, 660 nm and 684 nm laser light at the same dose both reduced paw swelling at four hours, to 0.58 ml and 0.76 ml against 1.67 ml without light. Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology B, 2007 Two mouse studies from one laboratory found 635 nm and 665 nm each showed an effect where 730 nm did not. Lasers in Medical Science, 2014 Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, 2012 The red band as a whole is active, and dose and regular use matter more than the third digit.
| Study | Wavelength | Design | Schedule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wrinkles and elasticity, 2007 | 633 nm, alone or with 830 nm | Sham-controlled, 76 people | Twice a week, 4 weeks |
| Texture and collagen, 2014 | 611 to 650 nm | Controlled, 136 people | About 9 J/cm², twice a week, 30 sessions |
| Crow's feet, 2025 | 630 nm with 850 nm | Sham-controlled, 60 people | 9 minutes, 5 times a week, 12 weeks |
| Wrinkles around the eyes, 2023 | 660 nm against 590 nm | Split-face, 137 women | 3.8 J/cm², 10 sessions in 4 weeks |
| Wrinkles, 2017 | 660 nm against white LED | Double-blind, 52 women | Daily, 12 weeks |
| Muscle strength, 2012 | 660 nm against 830 nm | Placebo-controlled crossover, 10 men | Once, before exercise |
Face trials at both bands mostly ran two to five sessions a week for 4 to 12 weeks, a pattern covered in how often should you use red light therapy.
Why does the number on the label matter less than it looks?
Because an LED emits a band, not a single line. A 630 nm LED and a 660 nm LED overlap at their edges.
An LED's bandwidth is "typically some tens of nanometers (e.g. 40 nm)". RP Photonics Diode lasers are much narrower, typically 1 to 2 nm, and a review comparing the two found that most comparisons suggest LEDs can stand in for lasers. Photochemical & Photobiological Sciences, 2018 One trial device listed its LEDs as 655 ± 20 nm, which covers 635 to 675 nm. Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, 2013 That is why a trial at 633 or 635 nm is fair evidence for a 630 nm LED, and one at 655 to 665 nm for a 660 nm LED.
Is 630 nm red light the same as photodynamic therapy?
No. Photodynamic therapy uses red light at about 630 to 635 nm to activate a light-sensitising drug applied to the skin, and without the drug there is no photodynamic reaction.
A clinic applies a "light-sensitive medicine", waits a few hours or days for it to build up in the abnormal cells, then uses a lamp or laser for around 10 to 45 minutes to destroy them, in conditions such as actinic keratoses. NHS, 2023 The drug becomes protoporphyrin IX in the skin, which absorbs strongly at 630 nm. One clinic series used 630 nm light at 100 mW/cm² for 25 to 30 minutes, 150 to 180 J/cm² per session. Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia, 2010 Red is chosen over blue for its "deeper tissue penetration". Practical Dermatology
A 630 nm channel on a wellness panel is photobiomodulation: the same colour, with no drug, for a different job. If you have recently had photodynamic therapy, follow your clinic's advice on light exposure before using any light device.
Can you use 630 nm and 660 nm together?
Yes. Running both spreads the light across the red band and both red peaks, and what the evidence supports is a good dose of red rather than one particular mix.
The 136-person trial is a guide: its red source was a band about 40 nm wide, and adding more colours did not improve on it. On a panel with separate red channels:
- Face sessions: the red channels, with amber if you like it, and near-infrared turned down, as described in seven wavelengths or nine.
- Comfort: if the visible red feels too bright, lower one red channel and raise another to keep the total red similar. This is a usage idea, not a trial finding.
- Muscles and joints: lead with near-infrared, the band that reaches below the skin.
- Eyes: wear the goggles at every wavelength, as covered in is red light therapy safe for eyes.
Is one red wavelength safer for darker skin?
Neither has been shown to be. Melanin absorbs a little more at 630 nm, but the difference is modest.
The American Academy of Dermatology notes that people with darker skin tones are "more sensitive to visible light, such as red light". AAD, 2024
Our precautions advise against using the panel on Fitzpatrick skin types V and VI, at every wavelength. Neither the AAD nor Cleveland Clinic picks a best red wavelength. Cleveland Clinic notes that "the wavelength affects how deeply the light penetrates your skin" and advises shielding the eyes. Cleveland Clinic, 2021 The AAD adds: "Don't substitute sunglasses for protective goggles."
How do Kivorla's panel and mask cover 630 and 660 nm?
The panel carries 630, 660 and 670 nm, each dimmable from 1 to 100% on its own. The mask's red is 665 nm, inside the 660 to 670 nm band.
The 9-Spectrum Red Light Therapy Panel has nine wavelengths: 480, 590, 630, 660, 670, 810, 830, 850 and 1060 nm. At 6 inches its red channels together deliver at least 150 W/m², or 15 mW/cm², by our published specification, so a 10-minute session at 6 inches gives at least about 9 J/cm² of red, the same order as the 136-person trial. The timer runs from 1 to 30 minutes, goggles and a controller are included, and suggested use is 10 to 15 minutes per area.
The 4-Wavelength Red Light Therapy Mask has no 630 nm channel. The red mode is 665 nm red with 850 and 1064 nm near-infrared, from laser diodes with a narrow line, used for 10 minutes up to four times a week at high brightness.

Kivorla devices are general wellness devices, not medical devices. Photodynamic therapy is a medical treatment and is not something these devices do. Do not use either device while taking photosensitising medication, and if you have recently had photodynamic therapy, ask your clinic before using any light device.
