Red Light Therapy for Bruises: What the Surgery Trials Show
Red light therapy for bruises has its best evidence after surgery: in a 2025 trial after nose surgery, 660 nm red light used at home made bruising and swelling settle sooner over the first two weeks. It appears to support the body's own clean-up rather than making a bruise vanish, and first aid comes first. Below: the trials, protocols, first aid timing, specific bruises and how to use our devices.
Key takeaways
- In a 2025 trial of 60 people after nose surgery, 660 nm LED light for 10 minutes three times a day gave lower median bruising scores at week 1 (2.5 against 3) and week 2 (1 against 2) than routine aftercare. J Lasers Med Sci, 2025
- In the same trial, both groups had the same bruising score at one month, so the light helped bruising settle sooner rather than changing the end result.
- Official first aid is ice for the first 24 to 48 hours and warmth only after about two days, so the simplest plan is to start light after 48 hours. Cleveland Clinic
- Most bruises fade within 2 weeks, while severe bruises and haematomas can take a month or longer. Cleveland Clinic
- In rats with a muscle bruise, only the lowest of four laser doses lowered inflammatory markers, so more light is not better. Lasers Med Sci, 2013
Does red light therapy help bruising heal faster?
Research after surgery suggests it helps bruising and swelling settle sooner. It works alongside the body's own clearing process rather than making a bruise disappear.
The controlled data come from facial surgery: one randomised trial after nose surgery (rhinoplasty) and smaller studies after eyelid surgery and laser resurfacing. After wisdom tooth surgery, a review of 33 randomised trials with 1,347 patients found swelling lower on day 2, with low certainty of evidence. National Elf Service, 2023 How the light acts on cells is explained in red light therapy for pain and inflammation.
What did the rhinoplasty trial find about bruising?
Bruising and swelling scores were lower at weeks 1 and 2 with 660 nm red light than with routine care alone. By one month both groups had the same scores.
Of 60 patients, the 30 in the light group used a portable 660 nm LED at home for 10 minutes, three times a day, for 14 days, held 5 to 10 cm from the nose and the area around the eyes, with goggles on. Each session delivered 10 J/cm². Two dermatologists who did not know the groups scored photos on a 1 to 4 scale. The comparison group had routine aftercare without a dummy light. No side effects were reported. J Lasers Med Sci, 2025
| Time | Bruising, light | Bruising, routine care | Swelling, light | Swelling, routine care |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | 3.5 | 3.25 | 4 | 4 |
| Week 1 | 2.5 | 3 | 2 | 3 |
| Week 2 | 1 | 2 | 1.5 | 2 |
| 1 month | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
Scores are medians; higher means worse. Differences at weeks 1 and 2 were statistically significant.
What happened in the eyelid surgery studies?
They point the same way, with faster early recovery where light was used. They are smaller studies, mostly by researchers who work with LED therapy.
In a split-face study, 10 people aged 44 to 59 had eyelid surgery plus laser resurfacing around the eyes, then 633 nm LED light on one side for 20 minutes. Side effects on the lit side cleared in one-half to one-third of the time. J Cosmet Laser Ther, 2006
A 2015 review reports a 60-person study after full-face laser resurfacing, in which the 830 nm LED group was "significantly superior" to controls for bruising and swelling at 72 hours. Laser Therapy, 2015 In the eyelid study, long-term results were not significantly better, so the gain sits in the early days.
Our article on red light therapy for scars and stretch marks covers a 145-person eyelid surgery trial using 830 nm LED on days 1, 2, 3 and 7. At home, use light only once the wound has closed and your surgeon is happy.
Which wavelengths, doses and schedules did the bruise studies use?
Red at 633 to 660 nm and near-infrared at 830 to 904 nm, with timed sessions of 10 to 20 minutes. Schedules ran from one session to three a day for two weeks.
| Study | Setting | Light | Dose per session | Schedule |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hoseini 2025 | Nose surgery, 60 people | 660 nm LED, 5 to 10 cm away | 10 J/cm², 10 min | 3 times a day, 14 days |
| Trelles and Allones 2006 | Eyelid surgery, 10 people | 633 nm LED | 96 J/cm², 20 min | After surgery |
| Trelles, Allones and Mayo 2006 | Full-face resurfacing, 60 people | 830 nm LED | 60 J/cm² | Immediately, 24 h, 72 h, then twice a week for 2 weeks |
| de Almeida 2013 | Rats, muscle bruise | 904 nm laser | 1 J worked best | Once, 1 hour after injury |
In the rat study, 1 J lowered inflammatory markers and 3, 6 and 9 J did not. Lasers Med Sci, 2013 Our guide to how much red light therapy is too much explains why a gentle dose often does more.
How is clinic laser treatment for bruises different from red light therapy?
Clinic lasers and intense pulsed light aim at the haemoglobin pigment inside the bruise. Red and near-infrared light at home acts on the surrounding cells, a process called photobiomodulation.
Oxygenated haemoglobin absorbs most at 418, 542 and 577 nm, and most bruise lasers work near these peaks. In one study a pulsed dye laser cleared 62% of bruising against 13% untreated at 24 hours, but by day 7 the figures were 87% and 81%. A pulsed dye laser given 30 minutes after injury slowed resolution. Dermatologic Therapy, 2019 Clinicians usually treat at 48 to 72 hours, once swelling starts to subside. Dermatology Times The lesson for home light: no need to rush.
Should you use ice, heat or red light in the first 48 hours?
Ice first. Official guidance is to cool a bruise for the first 24 to 48 hours and add warmth only after about two days, so the simplest plan is to start red light after 48 hours.
Cleveland Clinic advises ice for at most 15 minutes at a time, then heat after 2 days. Cleveland Clinic Mayo Clinic advises wrapped ice for 20 minutes, several times a day, for 1 to 2 days, with the area raised above the heart. Mayo Clinic, 2024 The NHS says to avoid heat, alcohol and massage for the first couple of days. NHS
Near-infrared warms the skin, and our panel's surface stays at or below 40°C. To start sooner, as the surgical trials did, use the red channels only, dimmed, at 12 inches. The skin should feel no more than slightly warm.
| When | Official first aid | Where light fits |
|---|---|---|
| Days 0 to 2 | Wrapped ice, raise the area, no heat or massage | Best to wait; if not, red only, dimmed, 12 inches |
| From day 2 | Warm, not hot, compresses | 10-minute sessions on closed skin |
| Day 3 | Pain still there after a minor injury: see a professional | Continue only if the bruise is improving |
Can you use red light for bruising after fillers or Botox?
Yes, once the injection timings allow: the day after Botox, and after 3 days for fillers once swelling has gone down. Start with the mask's red mode at its lowest brightness for 10 minutes, every other day.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons advises avoiding "excessive heat, like a sauna" for 24 to 48 hours after filler, and avoiding aspirin and anti-inflammatory painkillers for 24 to 48 hours after. ASPS The AAD says swelling and bruising "tend to clear within 7 to 14 days". AAD
LED studies on bruising come mainly from surgery. After fillers there is only a short 2015 journal letter on injection-site reactions, using 635 and 830 nm light. Clin Exp Dermatol, 2015 The restart timings for each procedure are in red light therapy after microneedling, Botox and fillers.
Does red light therapy help a black eye?
Bruising around the eye has been studied after eyelid and nose surgery, where light sped early recovery. Check the NHS warning signs first, because a black eye can come with an eye or head injury.
The NHS advises ice for 10 to 20 minutes regularly for 1 to 2 days, then warmth. A black eye usually clears in 2 to 3 weeks. Go to A&E for changes in vision, blood in the eye, or bruising around both eyes after a head injury. Avoid aspirin unless prescribed, as it "can make the bruising worse". NHS
Our mask has an eye cutout with no diodes over the eyes, so it lights the cheek, brow and forehead around a black eye, but little reaches the eyelid. With the panel, wear the goggles, close your eyes, and keep the red channels dimmed at 12 inches. See is red light therapy safe for eyes.
Can red light help a sports bruise, deep muscle bruise or haematoma?
The evidence here is animal and case-report work, and it favours a low dose. A deep muscle bruise takes about 4 to 6 weeks to heal, longer than a skin bruise, according to WebMD.
In the rat study, 904 nm laser at 1 J, given one hour after a blow to the shin muscle, lowered inflammatory markers more than diclofenac gel or 20 minutes of ice. Lasers Med Sci, 2013 Near-infrared at 810 to 850 nm reaches further than red, which suits a thigh or shin bruise; see light and muscle recovery.
A haematoma is a larger, raised collection of blood. Case reports describe 830 nm light after hip replacement Laser Therapy, 2015, and a single 808 nm session in two patients after neck and jaw liposuction, whose pain scores fell to 0 by 72 hours. J Lasers Med Sci, 2023 A firm lump should be seen by a doctor first.
What do bruise colours mean, and how long does each stage last?
A bruise usually moves from red to blue or purple, then green, then yellow-brown as the body breaks down haemoglobin. Most bruises fade within 2 weeks.
| Colour | Typical timing | What is happening |
|---|---|---|
| Red | At injury | Fresh blood under the skin |
| Blue or purple | 1 to 2 days | Blood losing its oxygen |
| Green | About day 6 | Haemoglobin broken down to biliverdin |
| Yellow-brown | About day 9 | Bilirubin, the last pigment to clear |
Timings from Dermatologic Therapy, 2019. Instruments detect yellow bilirubin about 24 hours after a bruise forms, and the eye about 48 hours. NTNU, 2004
Colour is a poor clock. In one study, bruise age was judged correctly within 24 hours only 40% of the time. Forensicmed On darker skin a bruise may look purple, dark brown or black. Cleveland Clinic To track progress, watch size and tenderness, and take photos in the same light. The bruise studies used red and near-infrared, so the mask's red mode is the one that matches them.
When does a bruise need a doctor, and what if you take blood thinners?
See a doctor for a bruise that is large, very painful, growing, unexplained or still there after 2 weeks. If you take blood thinners, ask your doctor before adding light.
- Pain: very painful swelling, or pain still there 3 days after a minor injury.
- Duration: bruising beyond 2 weeks, or a black eye beyond 3 weeks.
- A firm lump: this may be a haematoma.
- Easy bruising: frequent, large or unexplained bruises, nose or gum bleeds, or tiny red or purple dots on the skin.
- Injury signs: numbness, tingling, cold or blue-grey skin, or a crack heard at the time.
The NHS says to get urgent help for a black eye if you take warfarin or have a bleeding disorder. Blood thinners such as warfarin, clopidogrel, rivaroxaban and apixaban, along with aspirin, anti-inflammatory painkillers and steroids, make bruising more likely. Healthline Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own. Light does not change these causes.
How do you use Kivorla's panel and mask on a bruise?
Use the panel for bruises on the limbs, jaw and neck, and the mask for facial bruises such as those after injections. Both suit closed skin after the first 48 hours, with gentle settings.
The 9-Spectrum Red Light Therapy Panel has red channels at 630, 660 and 670 nm and near-infrared at 810, 830, 850 and 1060 nm, each dimmable from 1 to 100%. At 6 inches, red output is at least 150 W/m² and near-infrared at least 1,200 W/m². Goggles, a controller, a pulley and a door hook are included. Our precautions advise against using the panel on Fitzpatrick skin types V and VI.
- Match the rhinoplasty dose: red channels on, near-infrared off, at 6 inches for 10 minutes. On paper that gives at least about 9 J/cm² of red, close to the trial's 10 J/cm².
- Sports and limb bruises: add the 810, 830 and 850 nm channels at moderate brightness, at 6 inches for a small area or 12 inches for a broad one.
- How often: one or two 10-minute sessions a day, at least 6 hours apart, for up to two weeks.
- Keep it cool: warm, never hot. Step back or dim if the area heats up.
- Continuous light: the rhinoplasty trial used continuous light, so leave pulse mode off.
The 4-Wavelength Red Light Therapy Mask suits bruises on the cheeks, lips and forehead. Use the red mode (665 nm red with 850 and 1064 nm near-infrared). The manual allows 10 minutes up to 4 times a week at high brightness, or 15 minutes up to 3 times a week, with a maximum of 20 minutes a day. That is gentler than the trial's 30 minutes a day, so keep to the manual. For the jaw and neck, use the panel.
