Red Light Therapy for Energy: What the Research Shows

Red light therapy for energy has its clearest support in tired muscles: in small placebo-controlled trials, red and near-infrared light given just before exercise helped people do more repetitions before they tired, and in a sham-controlled trial, short forehead sessions lowered daytime sleepiness. In the lab, the rise in the cell's energy molecule, ATP, built up over hours rather than minutes. Below: the ATP timeline, the exercise and sleep trials and their settings, winter tiredness, timing, when to see a doctor first, and a routine with a panel and a mask.

Key takeaways

  • In a placebo-controlled crossover trial of 9 volleyball players, 810 nm light on the biceps 3 minutes before exercise raised repetitions from 34.6 to 39.6, about 14.5% more. Leal Junior, 2010
  • In mouse muscle cells, ATP was not significantly higher 5 minutes after one dose of red and near-infrared light, but rose from 1.28 to 4.53 nmol per well at 6 hours. Ferraresi, 2015
  • In a sham-controlled trial of 30 adults with chronic insomnia, three 10-minute sessions of 810 nm light to the forehead left the Epworth daytime sleepiness score 4.1 points lower than sham at one week. Mehdizadeh, 2025
  • A 2018 review of 39 trials with 861 healthy people linked the most positive muscle results to 20 to 60 J for small muscle groups and 60 to 300 J for large ones. Vanin, 2018
  • For winter low mood, Mayo Clinic advises a 10,000 lux light box for about 20 to 30 minutes within the first hour of waking, with eyes open. Mayo Clinic

Does red light therapy for energy work?

The research supports it most for muscle fatigue during and after exercise, with smaller early signals for daytime sleepiness. Trials measure energy through things they can count, such as repetitions, time to exhaustion and sleepiness scores.

People mean four different things by "energy", and each has its own evidence.

What people mean What researchers measured Clearest finding Type of evidence
Cell energy ATP and mitochondrial activity ATP peaked 3 to 6 hours after one dose Cell and mouse studies
Fatigue during exercise Repetitions, time to exhaustion, strength 14.5% more repetitions in 9 athletes Small placebo-controlled trials and a review of 39 trials
Daytime tiredness Daytime sleepiness and sleep quality scores Sleepiness 4.1 points lower than sham at one week One 30-person trial and small sleep trials
Winter low mood Mood scales with light boxes Bright white light at 10,000 lux, through the eyes A different tool from red light

Cleveland Clinic describes red light as thought to act on mitochondria, the cell's "power plant". Cleveland Clinic Our guide to what red light therapy is explains the full mechanism.

How quickly does red light raise ATP in your cells?

Not instantly: in mouse muscle cells, ATP was not significantly higher 5 minutes after one dose, then peaked 3 to 6 hours later. Mice showed the same pattern, with muscle ATP and fatigue resistance both highest 6 hours after a dose.

The cell study used 630 nm red and 850 nm near-infrared LEDs for 90 seconds. Ferraresi, 2015 ATP was 1.28 nmol per well without light, 2.01 at 5 minutes, 3.73 at 3 hours, 4.53 at 6 hours and 2.77 at 24 hours.

The same team then treated 50 mice on the legs and lower back with the same LEDs. Ferraresi, 2015, mice Mice tested 6 hours after the dose climbed a weighted ladder more times than any other group.

A 2017 review names cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondria as a main target of the light, and describes a "pronounced biphasic dose response": low doses stimulate and high doses may inhibit. Hamblin, 2017 So a session is not a quick jolt, and a longer one is not a stronger one.

Can red light therapy before a workout delay muscle fatigue?

In small placebo-controlled trials, yes: near-infrared light on the working muscle minutes before exercise led to more repetitions and longer time to exhaustion. A review of 39 trials with 861 healthy people found the same direction for time to exhaustion, repetitions and strength.

  • Biceps, 9 volleyball players: 810 nm light 3 minutes before exercise gave 39.6 repetitions against 34.6 with placebo, and time to exhaustion was 8.0% longer. Leal Junior, 2010
  • Thighs, 28 soccer players: 810 nm light at 10 or 50 J before hard exercise helped strength recover, with 50 J doing best. The middle dose, 30 J, showed no differences. Vanin, 2016
  • Thighs, 8 volleyball players, LED: a 660 and 850 nm LED cluster before sprint cycling lowered creatine kinase, a muscle damage marker, while it rose with placebo. Sprint power was similar in all conditions. Leal Junior, 2009
  • Thighs, 36 young men, after training: 808 nm light straight after each leg press session for 12 weeks raised the one-repetition maximum by 55%, against 26% with training alone. Ferraresi, 2011

The review rated the evidence "very low to moderate", with positive reports for lasers and LEDs at 655 to 950 nm. Vanin, 2018 For soreness in the days after training, see what the research says about light and muscle recovery.

What settings did the energy and fatigue trials use?

Exercise trials gave short doses, from 30 seconds to under 3 minutes per muscle, from lasers or LED clusters held on the skin, once before or after training. Sleep and whole-body trials used longer sessions of 10 to 30 minutes over days or weeks.

Study Who Light Dose Minutes Schedule Main result
Leal Junior, 2010 9 volleyball players 810 nm laser cluster, biceps 6 J per diode per site Half a minute per site Once, 3 minutes before exercise 14.5% more repetitions
Vanin, 2016 28 soccer players 810 nm laser cluster, thighs 10, 30 or 50 J Not stated Once, before exercise Better strength recovery at 10 and 50 J
Ferraresi, 2011 36 young men 808 nm laser, thighs 50.4 J in total About 2.3 After each session, 12 weeks Leg press up 55% against 26%
Zhao, 2012 20 female basketball players 658 nm whole-body unit 30 J/cm² 30 Nightly, 14 days Better sleep scores, melatonin up
Mehdizadeh, 2025 30 adults with insomnia 810 nm, forehead 60 J/cm² 10 3 days in a row Daytime sleepiness 4.1 points lower
Navarro-Ledesma, 2022 42 women with fibromyalgia 660 and 850 nm whole-body bed 25.2 J/cm² 20 3 a week, 4 weeks Pain lower than sham

What carries over to home use is the pattern: light on the muscles you work, regular sessions, moderate doses. Laser joules on one spot do not convert into panel minutes.

Can red light therapy help daytime tiredness after poor sleep?

Early trials point that way: in 30 adults with chronic insomnia, three 10-minute sessions of 810 nm light to the forehead lowered daytime sleepiness more than sham. Sleep research on light is still small, so treat this as a promising start.

In that trial, sleep quality scores were 4.6 points better than sham at one week, and daytime sleepiness was 4.1 points lower. "No serious adverse events occurred." Mehdizadeh, 2025

In 20 elite female basketball players, 30 minutes of 658 nm whole-body red light every night for 14 days raised melatonin from 22.2 to 38.8 pg/mL, against 21.7 to 23.8 with placebo. Zhao, 2012 Their 12-minute run improved 12.8%, against 5.5% with placebo, a gap that was not statistically significant.

A 2026 analysis of 5 small trials with 240 people found a small improvement in sleep quality. de Azevedo, 2026 See red light therapy for sleep for more.

Can red light therapy keep you awake if you use it at night?

It can, because bright light near bedtime makes people more alert, and red is no exception. Finish evening sessions about two hours before bed.

In a night-time lab study of 17 people, 630 nm red light sped up reaction times compared with dim light, without suppressing melatonin. Figueiro, 2016

Sources disagree on melatonin: the basketball study found it rose, while a University of Alabama at Birmingham sleep researcher says "All light suppresses melatonin production". UAB, 2026 Both support a dark last two hours before bed.

Is morning or evening better for red light therapy for energy?

For red and near-infrared light, regular sessions matter more than the hour; for exercise, the trials gave light minutes before or straight after training. Keep blue light to the morning, and keep the last two hours before bed free.

Our guide to red light therapy in the morning or at night explains why the time of day makes little difference for skin and muscle. In the mouse study the peak came 6 hours after a dose, though its authors noted that "the time response in mice and humans is not the same".

Can red light therapy for fatigue help with fibromyalgia?

Fatigue is among the fibromyalgia symptoms with the most consistent support in pooled trial data, as our fibromyalgia guide sets out. Whole-body red and near-infrared sessions have also improved pain and quality of life in a sham-controlled trial.

That trial gave 42 women 20-minute sessions in a 660 and 850 nm light bed, three times a week for 4 weeks. Navarro-Ledesma, 2022 At 6 months, pain was 2.00 points lower than sham, and leisure physical activity was higher. Navarro-Ledesma, 2024

An NHS study with no comparison group gave 19 people 18 whole-body sessions over about 6 weeks. Fitzmaurice, 2023 The fibromyalgia impact score fell from 79.7 to 55.3, and one participant described "more energy". See red light therapy for fibromyalgia for the full picture.

Does red light help winter tiredness, or do you need a SAD lamp?

For winter low mood, the studied tool is a bright white light box, which works through the eyes. Red and near-infrared light work on the skin and muscles, so they do a different job.

Mayo Clinic advises using a light box "With eyes open, but not looking directly at the light". Mayo Clinic Our devices are built the other way round: the mask has no diodes over the eyes, and the panel comes with goggles.

The NHS says light boxes are not usually available on the NHS "as there's not enough evidence to tell whether it's effective", though "many people find it helps their symptoms". NHS Our comparison of red light therapy vs SAD lamps covers this in detail.

When should tiredness send you to a doctor before trying light?

If tiredness lasts for weeks, does not lift with rest, or comes with other new symptoms, see a doctor first. Anaemia, an underactive thyroid, sleep apnoea and depression are common medical causes, and they need a diagnosis rather than a light routine.

Our precautions that matter here:

  • Thyroid: not with a thyroid condition or thyroid medication.
  • Pregnancy: not while pregnant; the panel also not while breastfeeding or preparing for pregnancy.
  • Other: not with epilepsy or over broken skin; the panel also not after sunburn on the body in the past 2 weeks or with Fitzpatrick skin types V or VI.
  • Napping: the panel is not for use by sleeping people, so do not doze in front of it.

Our precautions also rule out use with photosensitising medication, so anyone taking a medicine should check with their pharmacist or doctor before using the device.

How do you build an energy routine with a Kivorla panel and mask?

Use the panel on the muscles you train, shortly before or after the session, for 10 to 15 minutes per area, and finish evening sessions two hours before bed. Add the mask as a hands-free morning step for your face, before your skincare.

The 9-Spectrum Red Light Therapy Panel carries 480, 590, 630, 660, 670, 810, 830, 850 and 1060 nm, each dimmable from 1 to 100%. Its 660 and 850 nm channels match the LED clusters and whole-body beds in the trials, and 810 nm matches the athlete and sleep trials. At 6 inches it puts out at least 1,567 W/m². At 640 x 230 mm it covers half the body at a time, so treat larger areas in two positions.

  • Position: hang it on a door or wall with the included door hook, pulley, hanging cables and screws, or stand it upright on the floor. For shoulders and the upper back, hang it at that height.
  • Channels: 660, 810, 830 and 850 nm on; 630 nm optional; 480 and 590 nm at their lowest setting.
  • Distance: 6 inches for a joint, 12 inches for a broad area such as the thighs or back.
  • Timer: 10 to 15 minutes per area, with at least 6 hours between 30-minute sessions. If no time is set, it stops at 5 minutes.
  • Eyes: wear the included goggles when facing the panel.

The whole-body trials used beds at lower power for 20 to 30 minutes. To stay close to that range:

  • Shorter timer: it starts at 1 minute.
  • Dimmer channels: turn red and near-infrared down from 100%.
  • More distance: step back to 12 inches.

The 4-Wavelength Red Light Therapy Mask is a cordless, full-face silicone shell with one eye opening and no diodes over the eyes. The red mode pairs 665 nm red with 850 and 1064 nm near-infrared. The blue mode pairs 460 nm blue with 850 nm, so keep it for mornings. Brightness is 50, 70 or 90%, and the timer 5, 10 or 15 minutes. The manual allows 10 minutes up to four times a week at high brightness, or 15 minutes up to three times a week, and no more than 20 minutes a day. It is a face device for your skin routine; for the jaw, neck and the muscles you train, use the panel. The panel ships with goggles and a controller.

Standard shipping to the US, UK and Germany is free. Read the precautions before ordering. Under our return and refund policy, returns are accepted within 30 days: an unopened device with its seals intact is refunded less a 10% restocking fee, and an opened device that is undamaged and complete is refunded less 20%.

Kivorla devices are general wellness devices, not medical devices, and are not intended to treat fatigue, sleep problems or any condition. See a doctor if tiredness lasts for weeks or comes with other symptoms, and use a light box only on your doctor's advice for winter low mood.
