Red Light Therapy for Gums: What the Dental Research Shows
Red light therapy for gums has its best support as an add-on to dental treatment: in clinic trials, light given after a deep clean settled gum inflammation faster for 1 to 2 months, and light on gum surgery wounds helped the surface heal sooner. Those trials put the light on the gums inside the mouth, while a home mask or panel works from outside, on the skin of the lower face. Below: the studies, receding gums, deep cleans, bleeding gums, implants, settings, safety and home set-up.
Key takeaways
- A 2017 review of 7 trials with 180 people found gum pockets 0.40 mm shallower at 1 month when low-level laser light was added after a deep clean. Ren, 2017
- In a review of 12 trials on gum surgery wounds, complete surface healing by day 14 was about 3 times as likely with light. Ebrahimi, 2021
- Receding gums cannot grow back, and Cleveland Clinic calls a gum graft "the most predictable and long-lasting treatment option". Cleveland Clinic
- In 6 trials with 319 people who had type 2 diabetes, light added to deep cleaning left gum pockets 0.87 mm shallower at 3 months. Gong, 2026
- Gum light trials applied the light to the gums directly, inside the mouth or with the lips held apart, while home use with our devices means light on the skin outside the mouth.
Does red light therapy for gums work?
As an add-on to dental care, the evidence points to modest help: calmer inflammation in the first weeks after a deep clean and faster surface healing after gum surgery. It works alongside brushing, cleaning between teeth and your dentist's treatment, never in place of them.
| Study | Who | Light | What was found |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ren, 2017 | 7 trials, 180 people after a deep clean | 630 to 830 nm lasers | Pockets 0.40 mm shallower at 1 month and 0.28 mm at 2 months |
| Chen, 2020 | 19 people with periodontitis | 660 nm LED | Deepest pockets improved more with LED than without |
| Gong, 2026 | 6 trials, 319 people with type 2 diabetes | Clinic lasers | Pockets 0.87 mm shallower at 3 months |
| Ebrahimi, 2021 | 12 trials, gum surgery wounds | 588 to 1064 nm, mostly lasers, one 650 nm LED | Complete surface healing at day 14 about 3 times as likely |
| Paz, 2025 | 30 people after a gum graft | Two wavelengths, clinic device | More donor sites fully covered with new surface tissue by day 10 |
| Sedej, 2025 | 32 teenagers starting braces | 625, 660 and 850 nm LED | Gum overgrowth in 21.4% with light, 55.6% with placebo, at 4 weeks |
In the deep clean review, the extra gain showed at 1 and 2 months, not at 3 or 6 months. Ren, 2017
Did gum trials shine the light inside the mouth or through the cheek?
The trials put the light on the gums directly: clinic lasers were held on or just above the gum surface inside the mouth, and home dental devices in trials were mouthpieces. Our devices work from outside, on the skin of the lips, cheeks and jaw, as an add-on to dental care.
The deep clean review describes delivery as "light contact or non-contact on gingiva", the gum tissue itself. Ren, 2017 One trial placed the tip inside the gum pocket.
The closest design to light from outside is a 2025 trial in teenagers with new braces. Sedej, 2025 An LED unit was held about 5 cm from the mouth for 10 minutes, twice a week for 4 weeks.
- Lips held apart: a plastic retractor kept the lips open, so the light reached the teeth and gums directly.
- Gum overgrowth: 21.4% of the light group, against 55.6% with a placebo lamp, at 4 weeks.
Plaque and bleeding scores were similar in both groups. Participants were teenagers, treated in a clinic.
Never put a device or its light inside the mouth: both Kivorla devices are for use outside the body only.
Can red light therapy for gum recession make receding gums grow back?
No: receding gums do not grow back, and a gum graft is the dental option that covers exposed roots. Where light appears in recession care is the healing of the graft wound afterwards.
Cleveland Clinic puts it directly: "Unfortunately, receding gums can't grow back." It adds that treatment "can prevent it from getting worse". Cleveland Clinic
Recession is common. About 88% of people over 65 have it on at least one tooth.
Causes include brushing too hard, plaque, gum disease, tobacco and naturally thin gums.
Mayo Clinic describes soft tissue grafts, using tissue from the roof of the mouth, to "cover exposed roots". Mayo Clinic See a dentist or periodontist at the first sign, such as teeth that look longer or feel sensitive. The useful question about red light therapy for gum recession is how it fits around a graft.
Can red light help healing after a gum graft or other gum surgery?
In clinic trials, light shone on gum surgery wounds helped the surface heal faster. At home, use light only on intact skin outside the mouth, once the stitches are out and your dentist or periodontist agrees.
A 2025 trial followed 30 people after a gum graft, looking at the donor wound on the roof of the mouth. Paz, 2025 Light was given right after surgery and on days 3, 7, 10 and 15.
- Surface healing: more donor sites were fully covered with new surface tissue by day 10.
A review of 12 trials on open gum wounds found complete surface healing at day 14 about 3 times as likely with light. Ebrahimi, 2021
Never use a device over an open wound or stitches. Our after surgery guide sets out the same rule.
Does red light help after a deep clean for gum disease?
This is where most of the gum evidence sits: light added after scaling and root planing settled inflammation faster for 1 to 2 months. Use it at home only if your dentist agrees, and follow their aftercare first.
Scaling and root planing cleans below the gumline; pain can last a day or two, and sensitivity up to about a week. ADA MouthHealthy
- Sessions: trials in the 2017 review gave 3 to 10 sessions within 3 months of the deep clean.
- Pockets: 0.40 mm shallower at 1 month and 0.28 mm at 2 months than the deep clean alone.
- Inflammation: IL-1beta, an inflammatory signal in the gum fluid, was lower with light.
A split-mouth trial in 19 people used a 660 nm LED during or after the deep clean. Chen, 2020 The deepest pockets gained most.
After a deep clean, your dentist may place the antibiotic doxycycline in the gum pocket. Our precautions rule out photosensitising medication, so anyone taking a medicine should check with their pharmacist or doctor before using the device.
Does red light therapy help bleeding gums or gingivitis?
Bleeding gums are usually gingivitis, which daily cleaning and a professional clean can reverse, so see a dentist first. Light sits alongside that care, not in place of it.
The ADA says that at the gingivitis stage, "the disease is still reversible". ADA MouthHealthy Left alone, it can progress to periodontitis, which affects 47.2% of US adults over 30.
- Brush: two minutes, at least twice a day. Mayo Clinic
- After brushing: spit, do not rinse, and skip mouthwash straight after. NHS
- Between teeth: floss or interdental brushes once a day.
- Check-ups: a dentist or hygienist every 6 to 12 months.
The NHS advises an urgent dentist for very sore, swollen gums, loose teeth, ulcers or red patches, or a lump in the mouth or on the lip; with no dentist, call 111. Bleeding or bruising easily or for no reason needs an urgent GP appointment. NHS
Red or blue light for gums: what is the difference?
Red and near-infrared light are used to support tissue repair, while blue light in dental trials was paired with a dye rinse to target bacteria, a method called photodynamic therapy. Those dye trials used a mouthpiece worn inside the mouth.
A 2026 trial gave 200 adults with treated periodontitis usual care, with or without a home mouthpiece. Pakarinen, 2026 The group's device pairs 405 nm blue with 810 nm after a dye rinse. Tegelberg, 2025
- Bleeding at 6 months: 12.0% of sites with the mouthpiece, against 17.3% with care alone.
Our mask's blue mode, 460 nm blue with 850 nm, is not this method. For the skin around the mouth, use the red mode, as in our cold sores and lips articles.
Does red light help gum disease if you have type 2 diabetes?
A 2026 review found that light added to deep cleaning left gum pockets shallower at 3 months in people with type 2 diabetes. The trials used clinic lasers inside the mouth, alongside the dentist's treatment.
The review pooled 6 trials with 319 people. Gong, 2026
- Pocket depth: 0.87 mm shallower at 3 months.
- Gum attachment: 0.47 mm better.
- HbA1c: 0.81% lower, a borderline result.
Is red light safe around dental implants?
Implant results are mixed, so treat implants as a question for your dentist or surgeon. Start only once the site has closed and they agree, with light on the skin outside the mouth.
A 2024 review of 26 papers with 571 patients found better stability on one test and higher bone density with light. Photodiagnosis and Photodynamic Therapy, 2024 An earlier review of 8 trials found no difference in stability or success. Chen, 2019
For peri-implantitis, inflamed gums with bone loss around an implant, clinic laser light with a dye left pockets 0.86 mm shallower at 3 months. Yan, 2025
What settings did the gum light trials use?
Plain red and near-infrared trials used 630 to 850 nm, for 3 to 10 sessions or twice a week for 4 weeks, with the light on the gums. Surgery trials gave about 3 to 8 sessions in the first one to two weeks.
| Study | Light | Time per session | Schedule | Where the light went |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sedej, 2025 | 625, 660 and 850 nm LED | 10 minutes | 2 a week, 4 weeks | About 5 cm from the mouth, lips held apart |
| Ren, 2017 | 630 to 830 nm lasers | Varied | 3 to 10 sessions within 3 months | On the gum inside the mouth |
| Ebrahimi, 2021 | 588 to 1064 nm, mostly lasers | 32 to 2,400 seconds in total | About 3 to 8 sessions | On the wound, 1 mm to 2 cm away or in contact |
| Pakarinen, 2026; Tegelberg, 2025 | 405 nm blue and 810 nm, with dye | About 10 minutes | Daily, at least 5 days a week, 6 months | Mouthpiece inside the mouth |
The mask's 665 and 850 nm and the panel's 630, 660, 810, 830 and 850 nm channels sit in that band. What carries over is the pattern: red with near-infrared, regular sessions for several weeks, alongside dental treatment.
Is it safe to use red light near the mouth and eyes?
Yes, used from outside with the eyes protected: the mask has an eye opening with no diodes over the eyes, and the panel needs its goggles on and eyes closed. Never shine either device into the eyes or put one inside the mouth.
See our red light therapy goggles guide. Our precautions rule out both devices:
- Pregnancy: while pregnant, and for the panel also while breastfeeding or preparing for pregnancy.
- Seizures: epilepsy, or seizures triggered by light.
- Thyroid: a thyroid condition or thyroid medication, as the lower face sits close to the neck.
- Medicines: photosensitising medication.
- Skin: broken skin or an open wound on the area.
- Panel only: sunburn on the body in the past 2 weeks, Fitzpatrick skin types V or VI, or use while asleep.
How do you use a Kivorla mask or panel for your gums?
Use the mask in the red mode on clean, bare skin with your lips closed, starting at 50% brightness for 10 minutes, two to four times a week. Keep brushing, cleaning between teeth and your dentist's plan going, and judge any change at your next check-up.
The 4-Wavelength Red Light Therapy Mask is a full-face silicone shell that covers the mouth area, so the light falls on the skin of the lips and cheeks over the gums. The red mode combines 665 nm red with 850 and 1064 nm near-infrared.
- Start: Red mode, 50% brightness, 10-minute timer, lips closed and relaxed, on dry skin.
- Step up: to 70%, then 90%, only if any flush fades within the hour.
- Limits: 10 minutes up to 4 times a week at high brightness, or 15 minutes up to 3 times a week, and no more than 20 minutes a day.
- Course: 4 to 8 weeks, logging bleeding when brushing.
- Hygiene: wipe the inside after each session and do not share the mask.
The 9-Spectrum Red Light Therapy Panel carries 480, 590, 630, 660, 670, 810, 830, 850 and 1060 nm, each dimmable from 1 to 100%. It reaches the jaw and side of the face, as in our TMJ article.
- Position: hang it at face height with the included door hook and pulley, or stand it upright.
- Aim: side-on to the cheek and jaw, never straight at the face, and away from the front of the neck.
- Eyes: goggles on and eyes closed for the whole session.
- Channels: 630, 660, 810, 830, 850 and 1060 nm on; 480 and 590 nm at their lowest; continuous light.
- Time: 5 to 10 minutes per side at about 12 inches, building to 10 to 15 minutes, three to five times a week.
The gum trials gave small doses directly to the tissue. To stay near that range, turn the channels down from 100%, use a shorter timer (it starts at 1 minute) and keep to 12 inches. Leave at least 6 hours between 30-minute sessions. The surface stays at or below 40°C.
