Red Light Therapy for Men: Skin, Beards, Hair Loss, Muscles and Testosterone

Red light therapy for men has its strongest evidence for male pattern hair loss, with further support for smoother skin, fewer breakouts and better recovery after training. The light works the same way in men and women, but thicker, oilier skin and facial hair change how men use it. Below: skin, beards, shaving, hair loss, testosterone claims, recovery, sleep, trial settings and device set-up.

Key takeaways

  • A 2025 consensus of 21 dermatology and light experts gave light for pattern hair loss its top evidence grade, IA. Maghfour, JAAD 2025
  • In placebo-controlled trials lasting 24 weeks, men using low-level light grew 18.75 more terminal hairs per cm² than men using placebo. Feldman, 2023
  • Across 16 trials with 340 people, 183 of them men, light improved recovery from muscle fatigue. Bezerra, 2024
  • A review of 57 studies found that men's skin is generally thicker and produces more sebum than women's. Rahrovan, 2018
  • Even 2 mm of dark hair lets through 32 to 37% less light than lighter hair, according to the hair restoration surgeons' society. ISHRS, 2026

What are the red light therapy benefits for men?

The red light therapy benefits for men with the most research behind them are thicker hair in pattern hair loss, smoother skin, fewer breakouts and better muscle recovery. The research supports the same uses in women.

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says red light may give "subtle to noticeable" improvements in wrinkles, texture and loose skin. AAD

Goal What the research shows Evidence behind it Device that reaches it
Pattern hair loss More hairs than placebo in men's trials Top grade (IA) in the 2025 consensus Caps and helmets in trials; the panel reaches the scalp
Fine lines and texture Smoother skin and softer lines over weeks Grade IB in the 2025 consensus Mask, red mode
Breakouts on oily skin Fewer spots with home LED devices 2025 review of 6 trials Mask, blue mode
Recovery after training Better recovery from muscle fatigue 2024 review of 16 trials Panel
Knee pain Less pain than placebo 2019 review of 22 trials Panel
Testosterone Not shown in men A rat study and a white light box study Not a use for either device

Does red light therapy for men need different settings than for women?

No, the same settings and schedule apply. Men's skin is generally thicker and oilier, and the studies that included men found results in line with women's.

A 2018 review of 57 studies found that sebum, hydration, blood flow, pigmentation and thickness are generally higher in men's skin. Rahrovan, 2018

A 2023 study gave 15 women and 5 men aged 45 to 70 a 630 nm LED mask for 12 minutes, twice a week, for about 12 weeks, with no control group. Couturaud, 2023 The men's results pointed the same way as the women's, including less oil on the skin. For the wider evidence, see our guide to red light therapy for the face.

A second study looked at men only, using a mask combining 633, 830 and 1072 nm light for 6 weeks. Participants "perceived the greatest improvement in fine lines and wrinkles", and photo analysis showed improvement in wrinkles, pores and brown spots. Mineroff, 2023

Does a red light mask work if you have a beard or stubble?

Yes, on the skin the light can reach, but hair absorbs and scatters part of it. Skin under short stubble receives more light than skin under a dense, dark beard.

The hair restoration surgeons' society reports that "even 2mm of hair" cuts light transmission by 32 to 37% when dark hair is compared with lighter hair. ISHRS, 2026

  • Areas with little or no hair: light reaches the skin as normal.
  • Jawline and under the chin: the mask is a full-face shell with an eye opening and does not reach these areas. The panel does.
  • After shaving: wait until nicks or razor rash have healed, as our precautions rule out broken skin.

Can red light therapy help razor bumps or shaving rash?

The AAD's advice for razor bumps centres on how you shave, not on light. The light treatment studied for razor bumps is a clinic hair-removal laser, a different technology from a home mask.

The AAD says razor bumps are "especially common in men who have a darker skin tone", because coarse, curly hair curves back into the skin. AAD, razor bumps

  • Grow a beard if you can: bumps usually clear by about 3 months.
  • Prepare the skin: shave after a shower or warm compress, with moisturising shaving cream, and never dry shave.
  • Blade and technique: replace a single blade after 5 to 7 shaves, and shave with the grain in no more than two passes.

In a 2009 study of 22 people with stubborn razor bumps, five weekly sessions of a 1,064 nm hair-removal laser reduced bumps for a time. Dermatologic Surgery, 2009 That laser fires high-energy pulses at hair follicles. A mask's 1064 nm light shares the wavelength, not the energy, and does not remove hair.

See a dermatologist about persistent bumps. The AAD also advises seeing one before starting red light if you have a darker skin tone. AAD

Is an LED mask useful for oily, breakout-prone skin in men?

Yes, and in home-device trials blue light paired with red did particularly well for breakouts. That suits the oilier skin many men have.

A 2025 review of at-home LED devices pooled 6 studies with 216 people. Red, blue and combined devices all reduced spots, with combined red and blue "particularly" effective, over 4 to 12 weeks. HealthDay, 2025 Our guide to red light therapy for acne covers those trials.

Some acne treatments, including tetracycline antibiotics such as doxycycline, can make skin more sensitive to light. Our precautions rule out use with photosensitising medication, so anyone taking a medicine should check with their pharmacist or doctor before using the device.

Does red light therapy help male pattern baldness?

Yes, this is the best-supported use of light in men. A 2025 expert consensus gave it the top grade, IA, stating that light "can be effective at promoting hair regrowth".

That grade rests on meta-analyses of placebo-controlled trials. Maghfour, JAAD 2025 In a 2023 network meta-analysis of 17 placebo-controlled trials, men using low-level light had 12.21 more terminal hairs per cm² than placebo at 12 weeks, and 18.75 more at 24 weeks. Feldman, 2023

The AAD says light mainly makes hair thicker and longer, but "it won't regrow a full head of hair." AAD The NHS lists finasteride and minoxidil as the main treatments. NHS

The trials used caps, combs and helmets, and Kivorla devices are not designed as hair-loss devices. For caps, beards and minoxidil, see our guide to red light therapy for hair growth.

Does red light therapy increase testosterone?

No controlled study in men has shown that red or near-infrared light on the skin raises testosterone. The claim rests on a study in rats and a small study of bright white light seen through the eyes.

The rat study aimed a 670 or 808 nm laser directly at the testes of 30 young rats for 30 minutes a day over 5 days. Overall, testosterone was not significantly higher than in untreated rats. Ahn, 2013

In a conference presentation, 38 men with low sexual desire sat before a 10,000 lux white light box for 30 minutes each morning for 2 weeks. Testosterone rose from 2.1 to 3.6 ng/mL. MDedge, 2016 That light worked through the eyes, not on the skin.

A Johns Hopkins urologist has warned about heat near the testes: "If there is a temperature increase, sperm production will diminish." VERIFY, FOX61 Keep the panel on muscles and joints, away from the groin.

Can red light help men recover from lifting or ease sore knees?

The research supports better recovery from muscle fatigue, and one trial in men found light before training gave the larger strength gains. For sore knees, the closest evidence comes from knee arthritis trials, where light eased pain more than placebo.

A 2024 meta-analysis of 16 trials with 340 healthy people, 183 of them men, found that light "may aid in favoring fatigue recovery". Bezerra, 2024 Differences in peak strength were not significant.

In a 12-week trial of 48 men aged 18 to 35, light before each leg session gave greater strength gains than placebo. Vanin, 2016 See red light therapy for athletes for trials by sport.

For knees, a 2019 meta-analysis of 22 placebo-controlled trials found pain 18.7 mm lower than placebo at recommended doses, on a 100 mm scale. Stausholm, 2019 About 70% of participants were women.

Does an evening red light session help men sleep?

It may help a little as part of a wind-down routine. The one sports trial on red light and sleep was in women and used a nightly whole-body session.

In that trial, 20 elite female basketball players had 30 minutes of 658 nm red light nightly for 14 nights, and sleep scores improved more than with placebo. Zhao, 2012

In the evening, use red and near-infrared only with the blue channel at its lowest setting, and finish a couple of hours before bed. The panel is not for use by sleeping persons, so never doze off under it. See red light therapy for sleep for more on timing.

What settings did the trials in men use?

Face mask studies ran for 6 to 12 weeks, hair trials every other day for 16 weeks or more, and muscle trials applied light around training. Pick one goal and follow its schedule.

Study Who Area Light Dose or minutes Schedule Course
Couturaud 2023 (no control) 15 women, 5 men Face, mask 630 nm 21.7 mW/cm², 12 minutes Twice a week About 12 weeks
Mineroff 2023 Men Face, mask 633, 830 and 1072 nm Not in abstract Not in abstract 6 weeks
Lanzafame 2013 (placebo-controlled) 41 men, aged 18 to 48 Scalp, helmet 655 nm lasers and LEDs About 25 minutes Every other day 16 weeks
Vanin 2016 (placebo-controlled) 48 men, aged 18 to 35 Thigh muscles 905 nm laser, 875 and 640 nm LEDs Contact Before each training session 12 weeks
Stausholm 2019 (meta-analysis) Knee arthritis, about 70% women Knee 785 to 860 nm or 904 nm At least 4 J per spot at 785 to 860 nm Mostly 2 to 3 a week About 3.5 weeks
Zhao 2012 (placebo-controlled) 20 women athletes Whole body 658 nm 30 J/cm², 30 minutes Nightly 2 weeks

In the men-only hair trial, hair counts rose 67.2% with the active helmet against 28.4% with placebo. Lanzafame, 2013

Who should not use red light therapy, and when should men see a doctor first?

Skip it if any of our precautions apply, and see a doctor about new hair or beard loss, persistent razor bumps or signs of low testosterone. The AAD says short-term use appears safe, with mild side effects such as temporary irritation.

  • Both devices: not with epilepsy, a thyroid condition or thyroid medication, photosensitising medication, or broken skin on the area. The thyroid precaution matters when the panel lights the neck.
  • Panel: not for Fitzpatrick skin types V or VI, not within 2 weeks of sunburn on the body, and not with seizures triggered by light.
  • Eyes: wear the goggles with the panel. The AAD warns: "Don't substitute sunglasses for protective goggles."
  • Erection problems: see a doctor rather than trying a device.

How do you use the Kivorla mask and panel for men's goals?

Use the mask for the face and the panel for the jaw, neck, scalp, back, muscles and joints. Start gently, then keep one routine steady for several weeks before judging it.

The 4-Wavelength Red Light Therapy Mask is a cordless, food-grade silicone full-face shell with an eye opening and no diodes over the eyes. The red mode is 665 nm red with 850 and 1064 nm near-infrared, for lines, texture and pores; its 1064 nm sits close to the 1072 nm in the men-only study. The blue mode is 460 nm blue with 850 nm, for breakouts. Brightness is 50, 70 or 90%, and the timer 5, 10 or 15 minutes.

  • Weeks 1 to 2: on clean, dry skin, 50% brightness on the 5-minute timer, twice a week.
  • Build up: 10 minutes, then higher brightness, while skin stays calm.
  • Limits: 10 minutes up to 4 times a week at high brightness, or 15 minutes up to 3 times a week, and never more than 20 minutes a day.

More is not better: the 2025 consensus notes that lower doses generally stimulate and higher doses generally inhibit. Maghfour, JAAD 2025

The 9-Spectrum Red Light Therapy Panel carries 480, 590, 630, 660, 670, 810, 830, 850 and 1060 nm, each dimmable from 1 to 100%, with at least 1,567 W/m² at 6 inches. At 640 x 230 mm, it hangs on a door or wall with the included door hook, pulley, hanging cables and screws, or stands upright on the floor. Goggles and a controller come in the box.

  • Thighs, back or chest: 12 inches, 10 to 15 minutes per area, close to training.
  • Knees, elbows or shoulders: 6 inches, 10 to 15 minutes; for a shoulder, hang it at the right height on a door or wall.
  • Jaw and neck: hang it at face height, 12 inches away, goggles on.
  • Gentler sessions: set the timer from 1 minute, dim each wavelength, or step back to 12 inches.
  • Spacing: at least 6 hours between 30-minute sessions. If no time is set, it stops at 5 minutes.
