Red Light Therapy for Teeth: Braces, Sensitivity, Toothache and Safety

Red light therapy for teeth has its best support from dental clinics, where red and near-infrared light eased braces soreness and sensitive teeth in placebo-controlled trials. Most of that light went straight onto the gum or tooth inside the mouth, so a home mask or panel is an add-on to dental care. Below: braces, sensitive teeth, toothache warning signs, extractions, whitening, dental work under a mask, trial settings and how to use our devices.

Key takeaways

  • A 2017 meta-analysis of 20 randomised trials found less spontaneous and chewing pain from braces at 24 and 72 hours with laser light, at low certainty. Deana, 2017
  • In a 2022 trial of 60 adults, median pain 48 hours after orthodontic spacers went in was 3 out of 10 with 850 nm LED light on the gum, against 8.5 with no light. Bezerra, 2022
  • A 2023 Cochrane review found very low-certainty evidence that laser light shortened the first, alignment stage of brace treatment by about 49 days. El-Angbawi, 2023
  • A 2021 review of 35 studies found that low-level light eased sensitive teeth more than placebo, and about as well as standard desensitising products. Shan, 2021
  • Red light does not whiten teeth: across 23 trials of dental-chair bleaching, adding light to the gel made no significant difference to shade. Souto-Maior, 2019

Does red light therapy for teeth work?

For some dental problems, the trials point to yes: light eased braces pain and sensitive teeth, and may shorten the early stage of brace treatment. Most trials used clinic devices inside the mouth, and certainty is low.

Use What the trials found Where the light went
Braces or spacers Less pain in the first 1 to 3 days On the gum, inside the mouth
Tooth movement Shorter alignment stage, very low certainty Mostly inside the mouth
Sensitive teeth Less sensitivity than placebo On the tooth, in the dental chair
Root canal Lower pain in most of 7 trials In the dental chair
Whitening No added shade change With bleaching gel, in the dental chair

A 2024 review of 54 trials since 2018 found positive outcomes in 11 of 15 orthodontic trials and 12 of 19 oral surgery trials. Parker, 2024 The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh sees light as an adjunct that "may have a positive future in dental and oral health care". RCSEd, 2025

Does red light help with pain from new braces or spacers?

Yes, in clinic trials: light on the gum beside sore teeth lowered pain in the first days after braces or spacers went in. The gains were clearest at 24 hours, when brace pain tends to peak.

In a 2024 trial of 145 young adults, pain 24 hours after spacers went in was 12.7 out of 100 with an 810 nm laser. The group with no light scored 57.9. Al-Hanbali, 2024

LEDs did as well as a laser in the 2022 trial, and the authors concluded that "LED light can replace the Laser for pain relief in Orthodontics". Bezerra, 2022 A 2025 trial that used a low dose of LED light from outside the mouth measured no difference in brace pain. Sedej, 2025

Can red light make braces straighten teeth faster?

Possibly, in the early stage: the 2023 Cochrane review found very low-certainty evidence that light shortened the alignment stage. Total treatment time was not reported, so treat it as a question for your orthodontist.

With laser light, the alignment stage was 48.87 days shorter across 3 trials of 92 people. With LED light, one trial found it 24.5 days shorter. El-Angbawi, 2023

The 2025 trial is the closest to home use. Teenagers with braces had 625, 660 and 850 nm LED light from about 5 cm outside the mouth, 10 minutes twice a week for 4 weeks. Teeth moved 1.1 mm, against 0.6 mm with placebo. Sedej, 2025

In the same trial, gum overgrowth around the braces affected 21.4% of the light group and 55.6% of the placebo group. Light does not replace adjustments, elastics or retainers: your orthodontist sets the pace.

Can light from outside the mouth reach the teeth?

A mask or panel shines through the skin of the lips and cheeks, while most dental trials placed the light directly on the gum or tooth. The closest trial to home use shone an LED from about 5 cm outside the mouth, with the lips held open.

In the 2024 review, every orthodontic trial applied light inside the mouth, mostly at 780 to 980 nm. Parker, 2024 One small home study used an 850 nm LED mouthpiece. Shaughnessy, 2016

Both our devices stay outside the body: never put a device or its light inside your mouth. Our guide to cold laser vs red light therapy explains how clinic lasers and LEDs compare.

Can red light help sensitive teeth?

In the dental chair, low-level light reduced sensitivity more than placebo, with gains still seen after six months. It worked about as well as desensitising toothpaste or fluoride, so those stay the first step.

Sensitivity happens when worn enamel or receding gums expose dentine, whose tiny tubules lead towards the nerve. Cleveland Clinic

The 2021 review covered 630 to 1,067 nm light on the tooth, for 10 to 180 seconds, over 1 to 6 sessions. Light beat placebo immediately, at 1 to 6 months and beyond 6 months, and matched desensitising toothpastes. Shan, 2021

A Cochrane review of 23 trials and 936 people looked at all dental lasers. Pain from a puff of air was about 2.2 to 2.6 points lower on a 10-point scale than with placebo or no treatment, at low to very low certainty. Mahdian, 2021

Can red light therapy for tooth pain help a toothache?

Not on its own: a toothache is a sign of decay, an abscess, a cracked tooth, a loose filling or a similar problem that needs a dentist. Light has a place only once the cause has been found and treated.

The NHS also lists wisdom tooth infection, "problems with braces", gum disease and grinding as causes. NHS

  • See a dentist: if toothache lasts more than 2 days, painkillers do not help, or you have a high temperature, pain when biting, red gums, a bad taste, or a swollen cheek or jaw.
  • Go to A&E: for swelling around the eye or neck, or swelling that makes it hard to breathe, swallow or speak.
  • While you wait: ibuprofen or paracetamol, soft food, and a warm salt-water rinse for adults.

Some medicines used for dental pain and infection, such as ibuprofen or doxycycline, can make skin sensitive to light. Our precautions rule out photosensitising medication, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before using a device while you take any medicine.

Jaw ache from grinding is covered in our guide to red light therapy for TMJ, where a night guard stays the first step.

Can red light help after a tooth extraction or root canal?

After wisdom tooth removal, clinic laser trials found less pain and swelling in the first days. For root canal pain, a review of 7 trials found most reported lower pain with low-level laser.

The wisdom tooth evidence and home routine are in red light therapy after surgery. For any extraction, use light only on intact skin over the cheek, once your dentist agrees, and never over an open wound or inside the mouth.

The root canal review called low-level laser "promising" and asked for better trials. Chen, 2019 In a triple-blind trial of 36 people, pain was lower with laser on days 1 to 4, and fewer needed painkillers. Arslan, 2017 Pain that lasts or worsens after a root canal means going back to the dentist.

Does red light therapy whiten teeth?

No. Whitening is done by a bleaching gel, and even in the dental chair, adding light to the gel made no significant difference to shade.

The NHS describes whitening as lightening teeth "using a gel and sometimes a laser", done by a dental professional. It only works on natural teeth, not crowns, dentures or implants. NHS

The 2019 meta-analysis covered 23 trials and 925 patients, and found that "the use of light sources for in-office bleaching is not imperative". Souto-Maior, 2019 Blue light whitening kits pair a peroxide gel with a blue lamp; blue light on skin has a different use, covered in our guide to blue light therapy.

Is a red light mask safe over fillings, crowns, veneers or braces?

What is known points to yes: tooth-coloured fillings are set with intense blue light, and lasers applied straight onto teeth in 23 trials caused no obvious adverse events. With braces, a new implant or recent dental surgery, ask your dentist or orthodontist first.

The most common light-activated ingredient in tooth-coloured fillings absorbs most strongly around 469 nm, in the blue. Chen, 2007 For this topic, use the mask's red mode: 665 nm red with 850 and 1064 nm near-infrared.

The Cochrane sensitivity review reported that "no obvious adverse events were observed during the trials". Mahdian, 2021

  • Braces: check with your orthodontist, keep your lips closed and relaxed, and stop if the shell presses on the brackets or anything feels hot.
  • Implants or surgery: wait until your dentist agrees and the skin over the area is intact.
  • Eyes: the mask has an eye opening with no diodes over the eyes. Keep your eyes closed; our guide to red light therapy goggles explains why invisible near-infrared needs care.

What settings did the dental light trials use?

Trials used red or near-infrared light from 625 to 1,067 nm, mostly for seconds per point with lasers, or 10 minutes with the LED used outside the mouth. Brace courses ran 1 to 4 weeks, and sensitivity courses 1 to 6 sessions.

Study Use Light Time Schedule Where applied
Sedej, 2025 Tooth movement 625 + 660 + 850 nm LED 10 minutes 2 a week, 4 weeks About 5 cm outside the mouth, goggles on
Bezerra, 2022 Spacer pain 850 nm LED 57 seconds per site At fitting, 48 and 96 hours On the gum
Al-Hanbali, 2024 Spacer pain 810 nm laser 20 seconds at 8 points At fitting, 24 and 48 hours On the gum
Shaughnessy, 2016 Tooth alignment 850 nm LED mouthpiece About 4 minutes per arch Daily until aligned Inside the mouth, at home
Shan, 2021 Sensitive teeth 630 to 1,067 nm lasers 10 to 180 seconds 1 to 6 sessions On the tooth

Laser seconds per point do not convert into a home session. The pattern that carries over: red with near-infrared, gentle doses, regular sessions over a few weeks.

How do you use a Kivorla mask or panel for teeth?

Use the mask in the red mode over the lips and cheeks, starting at 50% brightness for 10 minutes, two to three times a week. For the jaw angle and back teeth, turn your cheek side-on to the panel, with the goggles on and your eyes closed.

The 4-Wavelength Red Light Therapy Mask is a full-face silicone shell with VCSEL laser diodes: 72 at 665 nm, 72 at 850 nm and 20 at 1064 nm. As our lips guide notes, the shell covers the mouth area, so light falls on the skin over the front and side teeth. It does not cover the jawline.

  • Start gently: Red mode, 50% brightness, 10 minutes. Step up to 70% and then 90% only if any flush fades within an hour.
  • Limits: 10 minutes up to 4 times a week at high brightness, or 15 minutes up to 3 times a week, and no more than 20 minutes a day.
  • Before: remove lip balm or lipstick, and keep your lips closed and relaxed.

The 9-Spectrum Red Light Therapy Panel carries 480, 590, 630, 660, 670, 810, 830, 850 and 1060 nm, each dimmable from 1 to 100%. It reaches the jaw angle and back teeth.

  • Position: hang it with its centre at face height on a door or wall, using the included door hook, pulley, hanging cables and screws, or stand it upright.
  • Aim: goggles on before the light comes on, eyes closed, cheek side-on. Never face the panel straight on.
  • Distance: start at 12 inches, coming closer towards the 6 inches our TMJ guide uses only if comfortable.
  • Channels: 630, 660 and 810 to 1060 nm on; 480 and 590 nm at their lowest; continuous light.
  • Timer: 5 to 10 minutes per side every other day, building to 10 to 15 minutes, three to five times a week.

Dental trials used small doses. To stay near that range, use the mask at 50% with the 5 or 10 minute timer; on the panel, dim each wavelength, set a shorter timer (from 1 minute) and keep to 12 inches. Leave at least 6 hours between 30-minute panel sessions.

Log soreness and cold sensitivity out of 10, judge at three to four weeks, and see your dentist if pain persists. Do not use either device if you are pregnant, have epilepsy, have a thyroid condition or take thyroid medication, take photosensitising medication, or have broken skin on the area. The panel is also ruled out while breastfeeding or preparing for pregnancy, with light-triggered seizures, after sunburn on the body in the past 2 weeks, and for Fitzpatrick skin types V or VI.
