Red Light Therapy for Under Eyes: Crow's Feet, Dark Circles and Eye Bags
Red light therapy has trial evidence for one thing around the eyes: the fine lines at the outer corners, known as crow's feet. In a sham-controlled trial of a home mask, raters scored crow's feet as improved in 86% of users at 12 weeks, against 17% with a sham mask. For dark circles and eye bags there is no controlled evidence. The one small study measured only a wrinkle score, which did not change. Most dark circles are pigment, visible blood vessels or a shadow, and most bags are fat and fluid, and light has not been shown to shift any of these. This article separates the three concerns, explains what causes each kind of dark circle, lists what doctors recommend, and covers how to use light near the eyes safely.
Does red light therapy help under the eyes?
For lines at the corners of the eyes, trials say yes. For dark circles and bags, there is no good evidence that it does.
| Concern | Evidence for red and near-infrared light |
|---|---|
| Crow's feet and fine lines | Several trials, including one against a sham mask. Lines soften over 8 to 12 weeks |
| Dark circles | No controlled trial. One uncontrolled study of 11 people, with self-reported improvement only |
| Eye bags and puffiness | No controlled trial in everyday puffiness or bags |
What do the trials show for crow's feet?
Shallower lines at the outer corners of the eyes after 4 to 12 weeks of regular sessions. Several skin trials chose this spot to measure.
| Trial | Light and schedule | Result at the eye corners |
|---|---|---|
| Park 2025, 60 adults, home mask against a sham mask, double-blind | 630 nm red with 850 nm near-infrared, 9 minutes, 5 times a week for 12 weeks | Crow's feet improved by a grade in 86.2% against 16.7% with sham, as scored by independent raters. Clear from week 8 |
| Rocha Mota 2023, 137 women, split face | 660 nm red on one side and 590 nm amber on the other, 10 sessions in 4 weeks | Wrinkle volume round the eyes down 31.6% with red and 29.9% with amber |
| Couturaud 2023, 20 people, no control group | 630 nm mask, 12 minutes twice a week for 12 weeks | Crow's feet depth down 15.6% at 4 weeks, 34.7% at 8 and 38.3% at 12 |
Sources: Park, Rocha Mota, Couturaud. All three measured the outer corner of the eye, not the lower lid. The changes are gradual and modest. Red light therapy before and after sets out the week-by-week figures.
Does red light therapy help dark circles?
There is no controlled evidence that it does. Whether it could even in principle depends on which kind of dark circle you have.
The only study is a 2024 pilot in which 11 people used an under-eye LED device with 633 and 830 nm light at home for six weeks. The measured wrinkle score barely moved, from 20.05 to 19.72, which was not statistically significant. Participants reported that their dark circles and bags looked better, but there was no comparison group, and neither colour nor puffiness was measured. The authors called for proper trials. Wang 2024.
Dermatology reviews sort dark circles into three kinds, and many people have a mix.
| Kind | What it is | How it looks | What light could plausibly do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pigment | Extra melanin, often after sun, eczema or rubbing, and often inherited | Brown; stays when the skin is gently stretched | No evidence that red light lightens pigment |
| Blood vessels | Thin skin showing the vessels and muscle beneath | Blue or purple; worse when tired | Red light has increased skin density elsewhere on the face, but nobody has measured under-eye colour |
| Shadow | A hollow under the eye, or a bag casting a shadow | Changes when you tilt your face to the light | Nothing. Light cannot fill a hollow |
Sources: Sarkar 2016, DermNet. The quick checks in the third column are rules of thumb. If your circles are the brown, pigment kind and you have a darker skin tone, note the American Academy of Dermatology's caution that darker skin is more sensitive to visible light, and speak to a dermatologist before using light on the area. AAD.
Does red light therapy get rid of eye bags?
We found no study showing that it does. Bags are mostly fat that has moved forward with age, and fluid that collects overnight.
The Mayo Clinic explains that the tissues supporting the eyelids weaken with age, the fat that cushions the eye moves into the lower lid, and fluid can gather there, more so after a salty meal or a short night. Mayo Clinic. Light does not move fat. Morning puffiness from fluid goes down with time upright and a cool compress.
What do doctors recommend for dark circles and bags?
Sleep, a cool compress, sun protection and concealer first. Creams, fillers, lasers and surgery are the medical options, depending on the cause.
- At home: at least seven hours of sleep, an extra pillow, a cool compress, less salt in the evening, managing allergies and not rubbing the eyes.
- Sun protection: sunscreen and sunglasses. One dermatology review calls sun protection a cornerstone of treatment for pigment-type circles, and the AAD says sunglasses can help reduce the lines caused by squinting.
- From a dermatologist: lightening creams for pigment, fillers for hollows, clinic lasers, and eyelid surgery for bags.
Sources: Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, AAD, Roberts 2014. None of these sources lists LED or red light for dark circles or bags. The clinic lasers they mention are high-energy treatments and are not comparable to an LED device.
Can you use an LED mask around the eyes, and is it safe?
A mask with an eye opening lights the skin around the eyes and leaves the eyes themselves uncovered. Do not try to get more light onto the lower lid by looking into a device or pressing one to closed eyelids.
Eyelid skin is very thin, between about a third of a millimetre and one millimetre on the upper lid, and closed lids let a share of red light through (Hwang 2013 for the thickness). So the area closest to the eye is the one place where more light is not the aim. With a panel, goggles go on every time, and they cover the under-eye area. If your eyes feel glare, dryness or irritation during a session, stop. Is red light therapy safe for your eyes and do you need goggles go through the detail.
How long does it take to work on lines around the eyes?
About eight weeks for a difference an assessor can see, and twelve for the largest change.
In the sham-controlled mask trial, raters could not yet tell the two groups apart at week 4 and could at week 8. The two mask trials used sessions of 9 to 12 minutes, two to five times a week, for 12 weeks. No trial has shown a change after one session. How long red light therapy takes to work has the general timeline.
Can you use eye cream or retinol with red light therapy?
Use the light on clean, dry skin and put eye cream on afterwards. We found no study testing eye creams or retinoids together with red light, in either direction.
Retinoids can make skin more sensitive to the sun, so they are used at night with sun protection by day. AAD. If a product stings around the eyes, stop using it. Red light mask vs retinol compares the two.
When should you see a doctor?
If darkening or swelling appears under one eye only, gets worse, or comes with other symptoms.
The Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic both say dark circles are usually not a medical problem, and both advise seeing a doctor for a change under just one eye. Puffiness can also go with thyroid or kidney conditions, and with allergies or dermatitis that can be treated.
Kivorla devices and the eye area
The mask lights the face around an eye opening, including the outer corners where crow's feet form. It has no diodes over the eyes, so the lower lid gets only spill light.
The 4-Wavelength Red Light Therapy Mask runs 665 nm red with 850 and 1064 nm near-infrared, with brightness at 50, 70 or 90% and a timer of 5, 10 or 15 minutes. Its output of 50 to 103 mW/cm² is higher than the masks in the trials above. The manual limits sessions to 10 minutes up to four times a week at high brightness, or 15 minutes up to three times a week, and never more than 20 minutes in a day. It has not been through its own clinical trial, and it is not a treatment for dark circles or bags. Its precautions say not to stare directly at the light source. The 9-Spectrum Red Light Therapy Panel is used with the supplied goggles on, which cover the eye area.
Read the precautions before ordering, since returns are accepted within 30 days, less a 10% restocking fee if the device is unopened with its seals intact, or 20% if it is opened but undamaged and complete. Standard shipping to the US, UK and Germany is free.
Kivorla devices are general wellness devices, not medical devices, and are not for treating the eyes. If you have an eye condition or have had eye surgery, speak to your eye doctor before using a light device near your face.
