Red Light Therapy for Weight Loss and Fat Loss: Inches, Not Pounds
Red light therapy for weight loss works on the tape measure more than the scale. In the sham-controlled trials, people lost a few centimetres or inches around the waist, hips, thighs and upper arms while their body weight stayed about the same, and the bigger falls in body fat came when light was added to an exercise programme. This article covers what the fat loss trials measured, how the light is thought to act on fat cells, how it fits with training, how long results last, what is known about a double chin, and how to plan sessions with a panel at home.
Does red light therapy help you lose weight?
Not much on the scale. Red light studies measure inches, not pounds: the light-only trials report smaller circumferences, while body weight and BMI barely moved.
The figures make the point. In an upper arm trial, BMI in the light group went from 27.96 to 28.12 and back to 27.97 while arm circumference fell. J Clin Aesthet Dermatol, 2012 In a waist trial, mean weight and BMI did not change. Obesity Surgery, 2011 In a once-a-week study, weight went from 79.0 to 78.3 kg, a change the authors called "not clinically meaningful". J Clin Aesthet Dermatol, 2016
That is why Cleveland Clinic says "There's no scientific evidence to support red light therapy use in weight loss" Cleveland Clinic, 2021, and why our overview of red light therapy benefits says it is not a weight loss tool. Weight loss usually means the number on the scale. Inches off a measured area, often called body contouring, is a different outcome, and it is the one the red light research studied.
What did trials of red light therapy for fat loss find?
In sham-controlled trials using 635 nm red light, the treated areas measured smaller after 6 to 8 sessions, and the placebo groups changed very little. The effects are counted in centimetres and inches.
| Trial | Light and schedule | Area | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jackson 2009, 67 people, placebo-controlled | 635 nm, 6 sessions in 2 weeks | Waist, hips and thighs combined | 3.51 in smaller with light, 0.68 in with placebo |
| Nestor 2012, 40 people, sham-controlled | 635 nm, 3 a week for 2 weeks | Both upper arms combined | 3.7 cm smaller with light, 0.2 cm with sham |
| Caruso-Davis 2011, 40 people, inactive-device control | 635 to 680 nm, about 30 min, 2 a week for 4 weeks | Waist | 2.15 cm difference in people whose weight stayed stable |
| Thornfeldt 2016, 54 people, no comparison group | 635 nm, once a week for 6 weeks | Waist, hips, thighs and upper abdomen combined | 5.4 in smaller at week 6, 6.2 in two weeks later |
In the largest of these, 62.86% of the light group reached a reduction of 3 inches or more, against 6.25% on placebo, with no diet or exercise requirement. Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, 2013 In the arm trial, 60% counted as responders against none on sham, and 16 of 20 were satisfied against 6 of 20. J Clin Aesthet Dermatol, 2012 In the waist trial, blinded ratings of before and after photographs also improved. Obesity Surgery, 2011
How soon do you see results from red light therapy for fat loss?
In the light-only trials, the tape showed a change after the first few sessions. Changes in body fat percentage were measured over longer programmes of 12 to 20 weeks, where light was added to exercise.
In the arm trial, the light group was already 2.2 cm smaller after the third session, and 3.7 cm smaller after six sessions over two weeks. J Clin Aesthet Dermatol, 2012 The waist trial measured about 0.4 to 0.5 cm less per treatment over four weeks. Obesity Surgery, 2011 Measure with a tape each week rather than waiting for the scale.
How does red light act on fat cells?
The leading explanation is that red light makes fat cells release some of their stored fat through a temporary change in the cell membrane. The cells are not killed.
In cultured human fat cells, light increased the release of triglycerides, the stored form of fat, with no rise in glycerol, which suggests it is not the usual fat-burning pathway, and the cells stayed alive. Obesity Surgery, 2011 An earlier laboratory study described "transitory micropores" in the membrane, although another lab could not see them, and other proposals involve signalling inside the cell. Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, 2013 So the mechanism is a working explanation rather than a settled one. The practical point holds either way: the fat cells remain, so eating and activity decide whether they fill again.
What happens when red light is added to exercise?
This is where the larger changes in body fat appeared. In women with obesity on a training programme, near-infrared light after each session led to bigger falls in fat mass and insulin resistance than the same training with a sham light.
- 20 weeks of training: 64 women with a BMI of 30 to 40 did aerobic and resistance training three times a week, with 808 nm light or a switched-off device straight after each session. Body fat percentage fell by 5.60 points with light against 4.33 with sham, insulin resistance (measured as HOMA-IR) fell significantly more, and the light group gained skeletal muscle while the sham group lost some. Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, 2015
- 16 weeks of training: one hour of exercise three times a week, then 16 minutes of 808 nm light. Leptin and the inflammatory marker ICAM-1 fell more than with placebo, and within the light group waist and neck circumference, body fat percentage and visceral fat area all fell. J Photochem Photobiol B, 2015
- 12 weeks of walking: 28 women walked on a treadmill three times a week, the light group wearing an LED belt on the abdomen at 630, 830, 880 and 956 nm. Abdominal circumference, abdominal fat percentage, fat mass and BMI fell significantly more than in the control group. J Phys Ther Sci, 2017
A 2025 meta-analysis of 11 randomised trials with 569 patients found larger waist and weight reductions when light therapy was part of the treatment, and BMI fell by a pooled 1.18 points more than in comparison groups. BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies, 2025 Many of those trials paired light with exercise or diet, so the weight figure reflects light added to a programme. The authors called for larger, longer trials.
A note on timing: in these studies the light came straight after each workout, or during the walk. Our guide to red light therapy before or after a workout favours before when the goal is performance. The two fit together: for fat loss, the trials used light on training days, around the session.
Does red light therapy work for belly fat?
The waist is the most studied area. Results came as centimetres off the waist measurement, both with light alone and with light added to walking or training.
The waist trial above found about 0.4 to 0.5 cm less waist per treatment and a 2.15 cm difference after four weeks in people whose weight held steady. Obesity Surgery, 2011 The walking study put the light directly on the abdomen. Loose skin on the belly after weight loss is a separate question, about skin firmness rather than fat, covered in red light therapy for loose skin.
How long do the results last?
In the trials that checked, the inches held for at least two weeks after the last session. Follow-up was short, so habits decide the longer term.
Arm reductions were maintained two weeks after treatment. J Clin Aesthet Dermatol, 2012 In the once-a-week study, the combined measurement kept falling for two weeks after the last session, from 5.4 to 6.2 inches. J Clin Aesthet Dermatol, 2016 Because light is thought to release fat from cells rather than destroy them, pair it with steady eating and exercise habits to keep the result.
How is red light different from laser lipo or fat freezing?
Red light releases stored fat and leaves the cells intact. Laser lipolysis, fat freezing, heat and ultrasound treatments are built to destroy fat cells.
| Low-level red light | Laser lipolysis | Cold, heat or ultrasound devices | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it works | Light prompts fat cells to release stored fat | Heat from a laser destroys fat cells | Destroys fat cells from outside the skin |
| Where | Clinic or home | Clinic | Clinic |
| Fat cells | Left intact | Destroyed | Destroyed |
| From the guidance and trials | 6 to 8 sessions in the main trials | Slimming effects fade with weight gain | For a small bulge that diet and exercise have not shifted; usually more than one session |
Cleveland Clinic describes laser lipolysis as a heat-based treatment and notes that its "slimming effects go away if you gain weight". Cleveland Clinic, 2023 That is a different technology from red light, and its claims do not transfer. The American Academy of Dermatology says good candidates for non-invasive fat removal "have a small bulge of fat that remains despite diet and exercise". AAD Mayo Clinic content lists low-level laser among the nonsurgical options and notes that these devices "generally don't produce results as dramatic as those achieved with liposuction". Mayo Clinic Care Network
Can red light therapy reduce a double chin?
The red light trials measured inches at the waist, hips, thighs and upper arms. The same 635 nm light has not yet been reported for the chin in a controlled trial, so expect any change there to be modest.
What red light is known for around the jaw is the skin: firmness and texture. Those findings are covered in red light therapy for the neck and red light therapy for the face. For the jawline, think of light as part of a skin routine.
How strong is the evidence for red light therapy for fat loss?
Promising and early. The sham-controlled red light trials are small, run for weeks rather than months, and most were funded by the device makers.
A 2013 review judged the evidence for light "as a stand-alone procedure" to be "still inadequate". Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, 2013 Since then, the exercise trials and the 2025 meta-analysis have pointed the same way: light shows its clearest effects as an add-on to a programme. One more point helps when reading other articles. Two often quoted Mayo Clinic weight loss pilots used 532 nm green light, not red. Lasers in Medical Science, 2020 BMC Obesity, 2016 They belong to a different body of evidence and are not part of the red light results above.
Is red light therapy for fat loss safe?
The trials that reported on safety found no adverse events. Cleveland Clinic describes red light as generally safe in the short term Cleveland Clinic, 2021, and advises protecting the eyes.
The arm trial's authors called the treatment "safe, painless, and effective in reducing upper arm circumference" J Clin Aesthet Dermatol, 2012, and the once-a-week study also reported no adverse events. J Clin Aesthet Dermatol, 2016 With a panel, wear the goggles and follow the precautions below.
How should you use red light for fat loss at home?
Follow the trial pattern: 2 to 3 sessions per area per week for 2 to 6 weeks, on bare skin, and measure with a tape every week. On training days, use the light around your workout.
| Area | Distance from the panel | Time | How to measure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Waist and lower belly | 12 in | 10 to 15 min front, then back | Tape at navel level |
| Hips | 12 in | 10 to 15 min front, then back | Tape at the widest point |
| Thighs | 12 in | 10 to 15 min | Tape at mid-thigh |
| Upper arms | 6 in | 10 to 15 min | Tape at mid-upper arm |
- Measure the same way each week: same spots, same time of day, before the session. Write the numbers down alongside your weight, since the tape is where the trials found the change.
- Space sessions: leave at least 6 hours between 30-minute sessions.
- Protect your eyes: wear the goggles, and keep the skin bare and dry.
- Keep the programme going: the bigger results in the research came from light plus regular training.
Mounting, distance and positioning are covered step by step in how to set up a red light panel at home.
How does the Kivorla panel fit this research?
The panel's 630 and 660 nm channels sit either side of the 635 nm used in the body contouring trials, and its 810, 830 and 850 nm channels are close to the 808 nm used in the exercise trials.
The 9-Spectrum Red Light Therapy Panel has nine wavelengths, 480, 590, 630, 660, 670, 810, 830, 850 and 1060 nm, each dimmable from 1 to 100%. At 6 inches it delivers at least 1,567 W/m², of which at least 150 W/m² is red and at least 1,200 W/m² near-infrared. As a rough guide, the arm trial's 3.94 J/cm² per treatment equals about 4.4 minutes of the red channels alone at their rated minimum of 15 mW/cm² at 6 inches, full brightness, though scanning lasers and LED panels deliver light differently. It measures 640 by 230 mm, about 25 by 9 inches. The timer runs from 1 to 30 minutes, the surface stays at or below 40°C, and goggles, a controller, a pulley and a door hook are included. Our precautions advise against using the panel on Fitzpatrick skin types V and VI.
Read the precautions before ordering: do not use the panel if you are pregnant, have epilepsy or a thyroid condition, take thyroid or photosensitising medication, or have broken skin on the area. Standard shipping to the US, UK and Germany is free. Under our return and refund policy, returns are accepted within 30 days: an unopened device with its seals intact is refunded less a 10% restocking fee, and an opened device that is undamaged and complete is refunded less 20%.
Kivorla devices are general wellness devices, not medical devices, and are not a treatment for obesity. Diet and activity drive weight loss, and light was studied as an add-on to them. Speak to a doctor before starting a weight loss programme if you have a health condition.
