Can You Use Red Light Therapy With Tretinoin? Order, Timing and Safety

Can you use red light therapy with tretinoin? In most cases yes, once the doctor who prescribed it agrees: the light goes on clean, bare skin first, and the tretinoin goes on at bedtime afterwards, never under the mask. The tretinoin label warns about sunlight and sunlamps, and red light contains no ultraviolet, but our precautions rule out photosensitising medication, so the prescriber has the final word. Below: the label, retinol versus tretinoin, order and timing, irritated days, the blue mode, isotretinoin and a starting plan with our mask.

Key takeaways

  • The US prescribing label for tretinoin cream and gel warns about sunlight and sunlamps, and does not mention LED or red light. DailyMed, 2024
  • Red light therapy does not use the ultraviolet light found in sunlight or tanning booths. Cleveland Clinic red light, 2021
  • The same label says tretinoin "may make your skin more susceptible to sunburn", so the prescriber should confirm a light device is fine. DailyMed, 2024
  • MedlinePlus advises using tretinoin daily at bedtime, which leaves room for a light session earlier the same evening. MedlinePlus, 2025
  • Cleveland Clinic lists oral isotretinoin among the medicines that make LED light therapy not appropriate. Cleveland Clinic LED, 2021

Can you use red light therapy with tretinoin?

Yes, with your prescriber's agreement and in a set order: red light on bare skin first, tretinoin afterwards at night. Many people can do both on the same evening, although sensitive skin may do better with separate evenings at first.

Retinol, sold over the counter, is converted in steps into retinoic acid, the active form that prescription tretinoin supplies directly. Our red light mask vs retinol article compares how each reaches collagen; this one deals with the prescription side.

The reasoning is short. The label's light warnings name sunlight, sunlamps and ultraviolet. Red and near-infrared light from a face mask contain no ultraviolet. Our precautions still rule out use with photosensitising medication, so the question goes to the person who wrote the prescription.

What does the tretinoin label say about sunlight and light devices?

The US label asks users to minimise sunlight, including sunlamps, and to avoid artificial sunlamps altogether. It does not mention visible light, LED devices or red light.

  • Sunlight: "Exposure to sunlight, including sunlamps, should be minimized" while using tretinoin. DailyMed, 2024
  • Sunburn: anyone with sunburn should not use tretinoin until "fully recovered".
  • Sun-sensitive people: those with a lot of sun at work, or "inherent sensitivity to the sun", should take particular care.
  • Weather: wind and cold "may be irritating" on treated skin.

A generic tretinoin cream label adds that some people "have been reported to have heightened susceptibility to sunlight" during treatment. Tretinoin cream label, 2018

MedlinePlus advises avoiding unnecessary or prolonged sunlight or "ultraviolet light (tanning beds and sunlamps)". MedlinePlus, 2025

Does tretinoin count as a photosensitising medication for a red light mask?

That depends on how your prescriber views it for a light device, which is why the advice is to ask. DermNet says topical retinoids "can cause photosensitivity", and the labels describe this as extra sensitivity to sunlight.

Light reactions to medicines mostly happen with ultraviolet A, between 315 and 400 nm. Some drugs react to ultraviolet B, or "even visible light". Di Bartolomeo, 2022 That explains why medicine labels talk about the sun, and also why a pharmacist or doctor should confirm your own case. DermNet, 2024

The American Academy of Dermatology says to see a dermatologist before red light therapy if you take "medication that increases your skin's sensitivity to light". AAD, 2024 Our precautions say the same in shorter form. Questions worth taking to the appointment:

  • The medicine: does my tretinoin strength count as photosensitising for a red and near-infrared device?
  • Everything else: do any of my other medicines, such as an acne antibiotic, add to light sensitivity?
  • Timing: is a session before my evening tretinoin fine, or would you prefer separate evenings at first?

Can you use red light therapy with retinol, and how is tretinoin different?

Yes, many people use red light therapy with retinol, light first and retinol afterwards. Tretinoin follows the same order but is stronger and prescription-only, so it needs the prescriber's agreement first.

The American Academy of Dermatology advises using retinoids "only at night", every other night to start and building up slowly, with sun protection during the day. AAD, 2021 Oral isotretinoin is a third case, with its own rules.

Should red light go before or after tretinoin, and how long should you wait?

Before: run the session on clean, bare skin, then apply tretinoin once the mask is off and your skin is dry. No official source sets a waiting time between the two.

Cleveland Clinic says LED sessions need "a clean, makeup-free face". Cleveland Clinic LED, 2021 MedlinePlus says to use tretinoin "daily at bedtime".

And tretinoin products can break down under light. In a lab test, one conventional tretinoin gel lost 84% after 8 hours under fluorescent light. Del Rosso, 2013

Our skincare order guide sets out the full evening sequence. In short:

  • Cleanse: wash and pat the face fully dry.
  • Light: mask session on bare skin, with nothing applied.
  • Tretinoin: once the mask switches off and your skin feels dry and comfortable, apply it as prescribed.
  • Moisturiser: if you use one, as your prescriber advised.

Should you stop tretinoin before starting red light therapy?

No source says to stop, and a prescription should never be paused or changed to fit a device. What helps is adding one new thing at a time.

  • Already settled on tretinoin: if your skin has been calm for a few weeks and your prescriber agrees, add the mask at a gentle setting.
  • New to both: start one, then bring in the other after two to four weeks.
  • Sensitive skin: keep tretinoin and light on different evenings at first, as our sensitive skin guide suggests.

MedlinePlus warns that products with a lot of alcohol, menthol, spices or lime can sting, "especially when you first use tretinoin". Starting them in different weeks shows which one caused any reaction.

Can you use the mask when tretinoin has left your skin red or peeling?

No: skip the session when your skin is red, raw, peeling, sunburnt or windburnt, and never use the mask on broken skin. Restart at a low setting once your skin has settled.

MedlinePlus lists tretinoin side effects including "dryness, itching, burning, stinging, peeling, swelling, redness". The label says not to use tretinoin on sunburned skin until fully recovered. Our precautions rule out broken skin, an open wound or a skin injury on the treatment area.

Irritation matters beyond comfort. The AAD notes that in skin of colour, retinoid "irritation can trigger dark marks, known as hyperpigmentation", and advises starting slowly with a moisturiser. AAD, 2021

Know what normal looks like after a session. Expect mild warmth and a pink flush that fades within the hour, with nothing lasting into the next day, as our mask side effects article describes. The AAD notes some people get temporary mild pain or irritated skin from red light. AAD, 2024 If redness lasts for hours or your skin stings, stop and ask a doctor.

Can you use the mask's blue mode with tretinoin for acne?

Yes, if your prescriber agrees, but keep tretinoin strictly for after a blue session, ideally with blue in the morning and tretinoin at night. The blue mode's 460 nm light sits in the range where retinoids are more sensitive to light.

In a lab study, a related retinoid broke down under light below 480 nm, most strongly at about 420 nm. Teraoka, 2001 The red mode's 665 nm red and 850 and 1064 nm near-infrared sit well above that range. Our acne article covers blue light and spots.

  • Acne antibiotics: a tretinoin cream label lists tetracyclines among "drugs known to be photosensitizers" not to combine with it. Tretinoin 0.02% cream label If you take one, mention it to your prescriber as well.
  • Dark marks or melasma: if your skin marks easily, use the red mode, not the blue mode, start low and talk to a dermatologist. The AAD notes darker skin is "more sensitive to visible light".

Can you use red light therapy while taking isotretinoin?

No: do not use the mask while taking isotretinoin, and ask the prescribing dermatologist when it is fine to start after the course. Isotretinoin is an oral medicine, a different situation from tretinoin cream.

Cleveland Clinic says LED therapy is not appropriate for people taking medicines that raise sensitivity to sunlight, "such as isotretinoin and lithium". Cleveland Clinic LED, 2021 MedlinePlus says isotretinoin "may make your skin sensitive to sunlight". MedlinePlus, 2018

  • During the course: the NHS advises against sunbeds, sunlamps, waxing, laser hair removal, microdermabrasion and chemical peels, and recommends SPF 30 or higher. NHS
  • After the course: MedlinePlus advises avoiding waxing, laser skin treatments and dermabrasion for 6 months afterwards, because of the risk of scarring. That rule names those treatments, not LED light, so timing for the mask is your dermatologist's call.

Can you use tretinoin and red light therapy while pregnant?

No. The AAD says "Retinoids should not be used during pregnancy", and pregnancy is on our list of reasons not to use the mask.

MedlinePlus asks you to tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding while using tretinoin. Isotretinoin requires contraception for at least 1 month before, during and at least 1 month after the course. NHS More detail is in red light therapy while pregnant.

What does the research show for each, and have they been tested together?

Each has its own trials: tretinoin improved fine and coarse wrinkles against a plain cream, and red and near-infrared light improved wrinkles and collagen against sham or untreated controls. No trial has combined the two, so the routine here is built from the drug label and dermatology guidance.

A 2025 meta-analysis of 8 randomised trials with 1,361 people found tretinoin improved fine and coarse wrinkles compared with a plain cream. Huang, 2025 A 2022 review of 7 trials found consistent gains in wrinkling, mottled pigment and sallowness, with effects "as early as 1 month". Sitohang, 2022

The light trials, about twice a week on the skin:

Study Who Light or product Minutes Sessions per week Course
Lee, 2007 (sham-controlled) 76 adults with facial wrinkles 633 nm, 830 nm or both, LED Not given in summary 2 4 weeks, then 3 months of follow-up
Wunsch, 2014 (untreated controls) 113 treated, 23 controls 611 to 650 nm red, some to 850 nm 12 to 25 2 30 sessions
Goldberg, 2006 36 adults with sun-damaged skin 633 and 830 nm LED Not given in summary About 2 9 sessions over 5 weeks, checked at 12 weeks
Tretinoin trials (Huang, 2025) 8 trials, 1,361 people Tretinoin versus plain cream Not applicable Daily, at bedtime 16 weeks to 2 years

In the Lee study, wrinkles fell by up to 36% and elasticity rose by up to 19% in the active groups, with "no adverse effects". Lee, 2007 Wunsch found smoother skin and higher collagen density than in untreated controls. Wunsch, 2014

A review of home skin devices found side effects from home LED light were mild, such as dryness. Cohen, 2021 Both tretinoin and light work over months, so judge your routine at 8 to 12 weeks rather than after a few sessions.

How do you use the Kivorla mask on tretinoin nights?

Once your prescriber agrees, cleanse and dry, use the red mode at 50% brightness for 5 or 10 minutes, then apply tretinoin after the mask switches off. Build up only while your skin stays calm, within the manual's limits.

The 4-Wavelength Red Light Therapy Mask is a cordless silicone shell with one eye opening and no diodes over the eyes. The red mode combines 665 nm red with 850 and 1064 nm near-infrared; the blue mode combines 460 nm blue with 850 nm. Brightness is 50, 70 or 90%, and the timer is 5, 10 or 15 minutes, after which the mask switches off by itself. This plan follows the label and dermatology guidance, not a trial protocol.

  • First week: red mode, 50% brightness, 5-minute timer, two to three times a week, eyes closed.
  • Building up: move to 10 minutes, then 70% and 90%, only while your skin stays calm.
  • Manual limits: 10-minute sessions up to 4 times a week at high brightness, or 15-minute sessions up to 3 times a week after a week of three 10-minute sessions. Never more than 20 minutes a day.
  • Afterwards: tretinoin as prescribed, then moisturiser if you use one. Never apply tretinoin before or under the mask.
  • Mornings: sunscreen every day, as the label advises whenever you are outside.
  • Controls: use the handheld controller with its colour screen, or voice control. A full charge takes about 3.5 hours and gives around 40 minutes of use; the mask cannot be used while charging.
  • Tracking: photos in the same light at weeks 0, 4 and 8.

The mask covers the face only. Never stare into the light.

Read the precautions before ordering. Standard shipping to the US, UK and Germany is free. Under our return and refund policy, returns are accepted within 30 days: an unopened device with its seals intact is refunded less a 10% restocking fee, and an opened device that is undamaged and complete is refunded less 20%.

Kivorla devices are general wellness devices, not medical devices. If you use tretinoin, isotretinoin or any other prescription medicine, ask the doctor who prescribed it before adding a light device, and never change a prescription to fit one.
