Red Light Therapy for Crepey Skin: Arms, Neck, Face and What Studies Show
Red light therapy for crepey skin can make thin, crinkled skin denser and smoother: in face and neck studies, red and near-infrared light raised skin density and reduced roughness and fine lines over two to three months. It firms and smooths the skin you have, and it does not remove loose skin. Below: causes, the areas studied, crepey skin on arms, timelines, trial settings and a home routine.
Key takeaways
- Cleveland Clinic describes crepey skin as thin skin with fine lines, and says it "typically can be traced to sun damage." Cleveland Clinic, 2024
- In a 12-week study of 20 adults using a 630 nm LED mask twice a week, cheek roughness fell by 23.8%. Couturaud, 2023
- In a sham-controlled trial of 70 adults, investigators rated neck lines as improved in 77.1% of people using a light-emitting neck device for 12 weeks, against 8.6% with a sham device. Park, 2025
- On aged arm skin, 0.4% retinol reduced fine wrinkles more than the same base without retinol in a 24-week trial of 36 adults. Kafi, 2007
- In a trial of 903 adults over about four and a half years, skin ageing was 24% less likely with daily sunscreen than with sunscreen used at will. Annals of Internal Medicine, 2013
Does red light therapy for crepey skin work?
In trials, red and near-infrared light improved the qualities that make skin look crepey: it became denser, smoother and less finely lined. The AAD describes the results as "subtle to noticeable" (AAD, 2024), with regular use needed.
"Crepey" is an everyday word, not a trial measurement, so studies measure its parts: density, roughness, fine lines, elasticity and hydration.
- Fine lines and elasticity: in a sham-controlled, split-face trial of 76 people, wrinkles fell by up to 36% and elasticity rose by up to 19%. Lee, 2007
- Fibres: skin samples in that trial showed a "marked increase" in collagen and elastic fibres.
- Density: after 30 twice-weekly red light sessions, an ultrasound collagen score rose by 5.75, while an untreated group's fell by 0.26. Wunsch and Matuschka, 2014
- Roughness: in the same study, the roughness value Ra fell by 1.79 with red light and rose by 0.95 without it.
Our guide to red light therapy for collagen explains how each measure works.
What causes crepey skin, and which causes can light change?
Sun damage is the main cause, followed by age, weight loss, dry skin and long-term steroid medicines. Light can improve the skin itself, while sunscreen, moisturiser and medical care deal with the causes.
Cleveland Clinic says crepey skin often begins in the 40s and names the arms, neck, chest, face and under-eye skin as common sites. Cleveland Clinic, 2024 Ultraviolet light breaks down collagen and elastin, and sun-exposed skin becomes thinner, drier and less elastic. Mayo Clinic, 2023
| Cause | What happens in the skin | What light can do | What else helps |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun damage | Collagen and elastin break down; skin thins | Denser, smoother skin in face and neck trials | Daily SPF 30 or higher |
| Age and menopause | Less collagen; thinner, drier skin | Same as above | Moisturiser, retinol |
| Major weight loss | Surplus skin, short of collagen | Firmer, smoother skin; not less skin | A clinician for surplus skin |
| Dry skin | Rough, crinkled surface | Hydration rose in one neck study | Daily moisturiser |
| Long-term steroid medicines | Thin, fragile skin | Not a job for light | A doctor's review |
One review puts collagen loss at "as much as 30% of skin collagen" in the first five years after menopause. Calleja-Agius, 2007 After major weight loss, abdominal skin was short of collagen, while elastic fibres were not depleted. Orpheu, 2010 Light can help that collagen side; for surplus skin, see red light therapy for loose skin.
Which crepey areas has the light research covered?
The face, the skin around the eyes and the neck have measured results. For the arms, chest and legs, the closest evidence comes from those trials and from one study that ran mostly whole-body light units.
| Area | What the research shows | Kivorla device |
|---|---|---|
| Eye corners and under the eyes | Periocular wrinkle volume down 31.6% in 4 weeks | Mask (eye opening; the lower lid gets spill light only) |
| Forehead and cheeks | Smoother, denser skin; fewer fine lines | Mask |
| Neck | Density, elasticity and hydration up; lines improved against sham | Panel |
| Chest | Lit with the face in one whole-body study | Panel |
| Arms, knees and legs | Face and neck results are the guide | Panel |
Can red light therapy help crepey skin on the arms?
A panel delivers the same red and near-infrared light that smoothed facial skin in trials, so the face and neck results are the best guide for the arms. Pair it with daily sunscreen and with the lotions that have arm-skin data: a retinoid or lactic acid.
The usual causes of crepey skin on arms are years of sun, age, large weight loss and long-term steroid medicines such as prednisone. UPMC, 2018
The best-controlled arm-skin trial tested retinol. Thirty-six adults with a mean age of 87 applied 0.4% retinol to one arm and the same base without it to the other, up to 3 times a week for 24 weeks. The fine wrinkle score fell by 1.64 on the retinol arm, against 0.08 on the other. Procollagen, a building block of collagen, also rose. Kafi, 2007
A review of fragile ageing skin adds forearm data for tretinoin, and for 12% lactic acid, which made the skin layers thicker and smoother. Dyer and Miller, 2018 These fit with light in one routine:
- Order: light first on clean, dry skin, then your lotion. See red light mask vs retinol for how the two compare.
- Pace: add one new product at a time, a few weeks apart.
- Irritation: skip light on skin that is red, raw or peeling.
- Prescription tretinoin: ask your prescriber before adding light.
Does red light help a crepey neck and chest?
The neck has two dedicated light studies, and both found improvement over 12 to 16 weeks of near-daily sessions. In one, skin density, elasticity and hydration all rose.
That study gave 30 women aged 30 to 47 a 630 and 850 nm neck device for 9 minutes a day over 16 weeks, with no control group. Wrinkle scores stayed lower 8 weeks after the last session. Lee, 2021
The second was a sham-controlled trial of 70 adults using 630 and 850 nm light for 9 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Park, 2025
- Week 4: neck lines improved in 42.9% of the light group, against 2.9% with sham.
- Week 12: 77.1% against 8.6%.
Neither study found thyroid changes in the healthy adults it enrolled. Even so, our precautions rule out use with a thyroid condition or thyroid medication. The panel reaches the neck and chest; the mask does not. See red light therapy for the neck for positioning.
Can red light help crepey skin under the eyes?
The eye area has some of the strongest controlled data on fine lines. In a randomised trial of 137 women, periocular wrinkle volume fell by 31.6% with 660 nm light over 4 weeks.
Amber light at 590 nm gave a 29.9% fall. Mota, 2023 Elasticity and hydration readings did not change over those 4 weeks.
Our mask has an eye opening with no diodes over the eyes. It lights the skin around the eyes and the outer corners, while the lower lid gets only spill light. Keep your eyes closed, and never press the mask against the eyelids. Our guide to red light therapy for under the eyes goes further.
How long before crepey skin looks smoother?
Expect texture to shift first, at around 3 to 4 weeks, with clearer change by week 8 and the largest by about month 3.
In the 12-week mask study, 20 adults aged 45 to 70 used 630 nm light for 12 minutes twice a week, with no control group. Couturaud, 2023
- Week 4: roughness down 6.8%, dermal density up 26.4%.
- Week 8: roughness down 18.2%, density up 41%.
- Week 12: roughness down 23.8%, density up 47.7%.
In the neck trial, the light group pulled ahead from week 4. Harvard Health says devices "must be used multiple times a week for four to six months." Harvard Health, 2025
Gains need upkeep. Mask study results held 28 days after the last session, and neck wrinkle scores held for 8 weeks. Take photos at weeks 0, 4, 8 and 12 in the same light.
What settings did the crepey-related light trials use?
Most used red light at 630 to 660 nm, often with near-infrared at 830 or 850 nm, for 9 to 25 minutes. Schedules ran from twice a week to daily, for 4 to 16 weeks.
| Study | Area | Light | Strength | Minutes | Schedule |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lee 2007 (sham-controlled) | Face | 633 nm, 830 nm, or both | Not given | Not given | Twice a week, 4 weeks |
| Wunsch 2014 (untreated comparison) | Whole body, or face and chest | 611 to 650 nm red, or broadband | About 8.5 to 9.6 J/cm² of red | 12 to 25 | Twice a week, 30 sessions |
| Couturaud 2023 (no control) | Face | 630 nm mask | 21.7 mW/cm²; 15.6 J/cm² | 12 | Twice a week, 12 weeks |
| Lee 2021 (no control) | Neck | 630 and 850 nm | 25 mW/cm² | 9 | Daily, 16 weeks |
| Park 2025 (sham-controlled) | Neck | 630 and 850 nm | 14 and 8 mW/cm² | 9 | 5 days a week, 12 weeks |
| Mota 2023 (randomised) | Eye area | 660 nm or 590 nm | 3.8 J/cm² | Not given | 10 sessions over 4 weeks |
A 2024 review notes "no agreement on the optimal wavelengths", and that near-infrared reaches deeper and did better on deeper wrinkles. Hernández-Bule, 2024 More light is not better: in cell and animal research, moderate doses helped most and very large doses lost the benefit. Huang, 2009
How do you stop crepey skin getting worse?
Daily sunscreen is the step with the strongest evidence. In a long Australian trial, daily users were 24% less likely to show skin ageing than people who applied it at will.
The AAD also advises broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day, self-tanner instead of tanning, not smoking, and a daily moisturiser, which "traps water in our skin". AAD, 2021
Drinking more water helps mainly if you drink little. In 49 women aged 22 to 34, about 2 litres of extra water a day for 30 days raised skin hydration, most in those who drank little to begin with. Palma, 2015 For crepey texture, moisturiser on the skin does more than extra glasses of water.
When is crepey skin on the arms or legs a reason to see a doctor?
See a doctor if the skin is very thin, tears or bruises after minor knocks, or if you use steroid creams or tablets long term. These can be signs of dermatoporosis, a fragile-skin condition that needs medical care rather than a light routine.
A 2018 review describes it on the forearms, backs of the hands and lower legs, with purple patches that fade over 1 to 3 weeks, white star-shaped scars and skin tears. It affected 32% of hospital in-patients aged 60 to 80. Dyer and Miller, 2018
Never use either device on broken skin. Our precautions rule out use with photosensitising medication, so anyone taking a medicine should check with their pharmacist or doctor before using the device. They also rule out pregnancy, epilepsy, and a thyroid condition or thyroid medication. The panel is not for use while breastfeeding or preparing for pregnancy, within 2 weeks of sunburn on the body, with seizures triggered by light, or on Fitzpatrick skin types V or VI. The AAD warns: "Don't substitute sunglasses for protective goggles." AAD, 2024
How do you use the Kivorla mask and panel for crepey skin?
Use the mask for the face and eye corners, and the panel for the neck, chest, arms and legs. Start gently, keep to 2 to 4 sessions a week, and judge by photos at 8 to 12 weeks.
The 4-Wavelength Red Light Therapy Mask is a cordless, full-face silicone shell with an eye opening. The red mode combines 665 nm red with 850 and 1064 nm near-infrared, the red plus near-infrared pairing most trials used. Brightness is 50, 70 or 90%, and the timer 5, 10 or 15 minutes.
- Weeks 1 to 2: on clean, dry skin, the red mode at 50% brightness, on the 5-minute timer if your skin is thin, dry or reactive.
- Build up: 10 minutes, then 70% or 90%, while skin stays calm.
- Limits: the manual allows 10 minutes up to 4 times a week at high brightness, or 15 minutes up to 3 times a week, and never more than 20 minutes in a day.
The 9-Spectrum Red Light Therapy Panel carries 480, 590, 630, 660, 670, 810, 830, 850 and 1060 nm, each dimmable from 1 to 100%. At 640 x 230 mm, it hangs on a door or wall with the included door hook, pulley, hanging cables and screws, or stands upright on the floor. Goggles and a controller come in the box.
- Channels: lead with 630, 660, 830 and 850 nm; set the 480 nm blue channel to its lowest setting.
- Distance: about 12 inches for the neck, chest, arms and legs.
- Position: hang it level with the neck and upper chest, chin slightly raised; for arms, turn the outer then the inner arm towards it.
- Timer: work towards 10 to 15 minutes per area, with at least 6 hours between 30-minute sessions.
The trials used gentle, regular doses. To stay near them, dim each wavelength, start with a short timer, as it begins at 1 minute, and step back from 6 to 12 inches. Wear the goggles with eyes closed.
