Red Light Therapy for Redness: Causes, Studies and Settings
Red light therapy for redness has its best support where the redness comes from irritation or healing skin: in small studies, red and yellow LED light made skin less red or less uncomfortable over the first days and weeks. Broken capillaries are a different matter, because the vessels themselves are closed with a vascular laser or IPL. Below: redness cause by cause, how the light acts, what the studies used, and gentle mask settings for red, reactive skin.
Key takeaways
- In a split-face trial of 20 people, the side given 590 nm LED light straight after a fractional laser was less red at 24 hours in all 20. Alster, 2009
- In a pilot study of 30 adults with sensitive skin, 28 reached a 60% fall in symptom scores with 3-minute, twice-weekly sessions of 630 nm red light. Sonbol, 2020
- A 2022 systematic review of 18 studies on red marks after acne found that pulsed dye laser was the most studied treatment. Kalantari, 2022
- Cleveland Clinic says: "You can't get rid of spider veins at home." Cleveland Clinic, 2025
Does red light help redness on the face?
It depends on what is causing the redness. Research supports red light most for calming redness from irritation and healing skin, while broken capillaries need a clinic laser or IPL.
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) lists "discoloration like redness" among the concerns red light may help, with results it calls "subtle to noticeable". AAD
| Cause of redness | What it looks like | What light research shows | Usual first step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Healing after laser, IPL or microneedling | Even pink or red flush over the treated area | Milder redness in the first 1 to 4 days in small clinic studies after laser or IPL | Your practitioner's aftercare |
| Sensitive or irritated skin | Redness with burning, itching or tightness | Symptoms eased in a 30-person pilot of 630 nm red light | Find and stop the trigger |
| Red marks after acne | Flat red or pink spots where breakouts were | Studied treatments are vascular lasers, IPL and some creams | Time, sunscreen, a dermatologist for stubborn marks |
| Windburn | Red, tender, burning cheeks after cold wind | Redness usually fades within a few days with basic care | Moisturiser, gentle cleanser, SPF 30 or higher |
| Broken capillaries | Fine red lines, often on the nose and cheeks | LED light is not used to close vessels | Vascular laser or IPL |
Rosacea is its own condition. Our guide to red light therapy for rosacea covers colours, heat and settings for it.
How does red light therapy for redness work?
Red and near-infrared light calm inflammation in cells, which is the main reason they may help redness from irritation and healing. They do not shut down a widened blood vessel.
A 2017 review called "an overall reduction in inflammation" one of the most reproducible effects of this kind of light. Hamblin, 2017
- Stressed cells: harmful reactive oxygen molecules fall and antioxidant defences rise.
- Immune cells: in activated inflammatory cells, inflammation markers fall. Most of this comes from cell and animal work.
The same review describes "a pronounced biphasic dose response": low doses stimulate, high doses inhibit. For red, reactive skin, that argues for short, gentle sessions rather than long ones.
Can red light calm redness after laser, IPL or microneedling?
In small clinic studies, LED light given straight after a laser or IPL session made redness milder for the first one to four days. Both sides of the face then cleared at about the same time, so expect calmer skin early rather than a shorter recovery.
- Alster, 2009: 20 people had one 590 nm session on half the face straight after a non-ablative fractional laser. At 24 hours, the LED side was less red in all 20. By 96 hours, both sides looked the same. Alster, 2009
- Oh, 2013: 10 people had 635 nm light on one side straight after fractional CO2 laser, then daily for 7 days. Redness faded faster on the LED side, with a clear difference from day 4. Oh, 2013
- Khoury, 2008: 15 adults had a 35-second LED treatment on one side straight after IPL. Right after, redness scored 43.3 on the LED side against 52.7 on the other, on a 100-point scale. Both sides scored 0 at one week. Khoury, 2008
- Wanitphakdeedecha, 2019: after fractional CO2 laser, 17 people had 830 and 590 nm LED light on one side. Both sides had a smaller rise in redness than a laser-only group of 19, and redness lasted 7.4 days on both sides. Wanitphakdeedecha, 2019
Two small controlled trials on laser-treated arm skin found no clear difference in redness. Le Duff, 2022; Soliman, 2024
These were clinic sessions. At home, freshly treated skin counts as broken skin, and our precautions rule out use on it. After microneedling, Cleveland Clinic says skin is "mildly red for about 24 hours". Cleveland Clinic Our guide to red light therapy after microneedling, Botox, fillers and peels gives the waiting time for each procedure.
Can red light soothe sensitive skin after a product reaction?
One pilot study suggests it can ease the burning, itching and tightness of sensitive skin. It used short, low-dose sessions of 630 nm red light twice a week.
The study treated 30 adults aged 20 to 40 with sensitive facial skin. Sonbol, 2020 Each session gave 7 J/cm² in 3 minutes, from 10 cm away. Sessions continued until symptom scores fell by 60%, for up to 8 weeks.
- Main goal: 28 of 30 people reached a 60% fall in symptom scores.
- Symptom score: fell from 54.7 to 14.4 by the last session.
- After stopping: the score was 13.9 two months later.
The pilot had no comparison group, and it used a symptom questionnaire rather than measuring redness. Treat it as an early, encouraging signal.
Start by finding the trigger. The NHS says irritant contact dermatitis, from soaps, detergents or frequent washing, is the most common type, and it usually clears once the trigger is found and avoided. NHS Light fits alongside that care, on skin that is not weeping or broken.
Will red light fade red marks left by acne?
Flat red marks after acne usually fade on their own, though it can take time. The treatments studied for stubborn red marks are vascular lasers, IPL and a few prescription creams.
The AAD says these marks are "usually red or pink" on lighter skin and often brown on darker skin. AAD, acne scars They "usually fade, leaving no trace", and a dermatologist can help them fade faster.
A 2022 review included 18 studies. Kalantari, 2022
- Devices: pulsed dye laser was the most common, and Nd:YAG laser came second.
- Creams: oxymetazoline, tranexamic acid and brimonidine "showed promise".
Red light fits a routine for calmer skin alongside your acne care. On marked skin, choose red over blue. Our guide to red light therapy for acne reports a 2014 study in which 415 nm blue light caused lasting darkening while 630 nm red did not. If your marks are brown rather than red, see our guide to red light therapy for hyperpigmentation. Wear sunscreen daily either way.
Some acne medicines, such as tetracycline antibiotics like doxycycline, can make skin more sensitive to light. Our precautions rule out use with photosensitising medication, so if you take any medicine, check with your pharmacist or doctor before using a light device.
Can red light therapy get rid of broken capillaries?
Broken capillaries are widened blood vessels, and dermatology sources close them with a vascular laser, IPL, electrosurgery or sclerotherapy. Red light suits the skin around them rather than the vessels themselves.
DermNet describes them as "visible small linear red blood vessels (broken capillaries)". DermNet Causes include sun-damaged and aged skin, rosacea, pregnancy, liver disease and long-term steroid use. Cleveland Clinic calls sun damage "the most common cause". Cleveland Clinic, 2025
A vascular laser heats the blood inside the vessel until the vessel collapses, which an NHS laser centre describes as "shutting down the blood vessels". North Bristol NHS Trust LED light at wellness levels is designed for a different job.
So if you are weighing red light therapy for broken capillaries, use it for the skin around them and book a vascular treatment for the vessels. Near-infrared warms the skin a little, so start at the lowest brightness. If your capillaries come with flushing, follow the heat advice in our rosacea guide.
Which treatments close broken capillaries on the cheeks and nose?
Vascular lasers and IPL are the main options, usually over several sessions. Cleveland Clinic describes three to four sessions every three to four months, then touch-ups every 6 to 12 months.
- Lasers and IPL: DermNet lists pulsed dye, KTP and Nd:YAG lasers and IPL, with repeat sessions "a month or so apart" for extensive veins. DermNet
- Recovery: after pulsed dye laser, purple bruising lasts about a week, and high-factor sunblock is needed throughout. North Bristol NHS Trust
- Cost in the UK: the same centre says treatment is not routinely NHS-funded, with self-pay from £150 per session.
Treated vessels can reopen. To prevent new ones, Cleveland Clinic advises daily sunscreen, limiting alcohol, not overusing steroid creams and avoiding harsh exfoliants. A new cluster of vessels, or one that bleeds, is worth showing to a dermatologist.
Does red light help windburnt cheeks?
Windburn redness usually fades within a few days with basic skin care, so light is optional. If you use it, wait until the skin is no longer hot, sore or raw.
Windburn brings redness, tenderness and burning after cold, windy weather. Healthline, 2023
- Wash: lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser.
- Moisturise: often, and skip exfoliants until the skin has healed.
- Protect: SPF 30 or higher outdoors.
Treat raw or peeling windburn as broken skin. Our guide to red light therapy for sunburn explains when burnt skin is ready for light.
Why is my face red after a red light session?
A pink flush that fades within the hour is a normal response to extra blood flow and warmth. Redness that lasts for hours, or a rash, is not, and is a reason to stop.
The 2025 consensus lists redness among the "generally mild" side effects of this kind of light. Maghfour, 2025 A 2015 review recorded one patient with "post-treatment erythema that lasted 24 hours". Opel, 2015
If heat sets off your redness, start at the lowest brightness and the shortest timer. Our article on red light therapy mask side effects sets out what is normal and what is not.
What settings did the redness studies use?
Short sessions at low doses, given twice a week up to daily. The procedure studies ran for days, and the sensitive-skin pilot for up to 8 weeks.
| Study | Redness type | Light | Dose and time | Schedule |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alster, 2009 (20, split face) | After non-ablative fractional laser | 590 nm | Not given in the abstract | One session, straight after |
| Oh, 2013 (10, split face) | After fractional CO2 laser | 635 nm | Not given in the record | Straight after, then daily for 7 days |
| Khoury, 2008 (15, split face) | After IPL | Yellow LED | 35 seconds | Straight after and at 24 hours |
| Wanitphakdeedecha, 2019 (17 plus 19) | After fractional CO2 laser | 830 and 590 nm | Not given in the abstract | After one laser session |
| Sonbol, 2020 (30, no control) | Sensitive skin symptoms | About 630 nm | 7 J/cm² in 3 minutes, at 10 cm | Twice a week, 2 to 8 sessions |
Cleveland Clinic describes sessions "one to three times a week for weeks or even months". Cleveland Clinic Harvard Health says devices are used "multiple times a week for four to six months". Harvard Health, 2025 For red skin, more time does not mean less redness.
How do you use the Kivorla mask on red, reactive skin?
Use the red mode at 50% brightness on the 5-minute timer, two to three times a week, on clean, dry, unbroken skin. Build up only while any flush fades within the hour.
The 4-Wavelength Red Light Therapy Mask is a cordless, full-face silicone shell with an eye opening and no diodes over the eyes. The red mode combines 665 nm red with 850 and 1064 nm near-infrared. Its red sits close to the 630 to 635 nm red of the sensitive-skin and post-laser studies, and its 850 nm sits near the 830 nm used in one of them. The blue mode pairs 460 nm blue with 850 nm for breakouts: keep it off recovering or marked skin.
- Weeks 1 to 2: Red mode, 50% brightness, 5 minutes, two to three times a week. The sensitive-skin pilot used 3-minute sessions at a low dose, so short and gentle keeps you near the studied range.
- Build up: move to 10 minutes only if any pink flush has faded within the hour. Raise the brightness later, while skin stays calm.
- Limits: the manual allows 10 minutes up to 4 times a week at high brightness, or 15 minutes up to 3 times a week, and never more than 20 minutes in a day.
- After a procedure: wait until the skin has closed, no longer stings and your practitioner agrees.
- Stop: if redness lasts hours, or burning or a rash appears.
- Track: photos at weeks 0, 4 and 8 in the same light.
The mask covers the face inside its shell. For redness on the neck or below the jaw, the 9-Spectrum Red Light Therapy Panel reaches those areas. Our precautions rule out the mask during pregnancy, with epilepsy, a thyroid condition or thyroid medication, with photosensitising medication, and on broken skin or an open wound.
Standard shipping to the US, UK and Germany is free. Read the precautions before ordering. Under our return and refund policy, returns are accepted within 30 days: an unopened device with its seals intact is refunded less a 10% restocking fee, and an opened device that is undamaged and complete is refunded less 20%.
Kivorla devices are general wellness devices, not medical devices, and are not intended to treat rosacea, dermatitis or broken capillaries. See a doctor about redness that is new, spreading, hot or painful, and a dermatologist about new or bleeding vessels.
