Red Light Therapy for Sun Damage: Lines, Tone, Spots and Body Areas

Red light therapy for sun damage can soften several visible signs of photoaging: in trials on sun-aged facial skin, red, amber and near-infrared light smoothed fine lines and rough texture and evened tone a little over 4 to 12 weeks. It works alongside daily sunscreen, which has the strongest evidence of all. Below: which signs of sun damage light has data for, how long changes take, the trial settings, the neck, chest and hands, which spots to check first, and how light fits beside sunscreen and retinoids.

Key takeaways

  • In a study of 90 people with photoaged skin, 8 sessions of 590 nm amber LED light over 4 weeks reduced signs of photoaging in 90% of them, including redness and pigmentation. Weiss, 2005
  • In a sham-controlled split-face trial of 76 people, red and near-infrared LED light reduced wrinkles by up to 36% and raised elasticity by up to 19%. Lee, 2007
  • In a 12-week study of 20 adults using a 630 nm LED mask twice a week, evenness of skin tone improved by 34.9%. Couturaud, 2023
  • In a 4.5-year trial of 903 adults, people who used sunscreen every day showed no detectable increase in skin ageing. Hughes, 2013
  • The AAD calls actinic keratoses "precancerous skin growths", so rough, scaly spots need a dermatologist before any light at home. AAD, actinic keratosis

Can red light therapy for sun damage reverse the signs?

It can improve how several signs of sun damage look, but it does not erase the damage. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) describes results on the face as "subtle to noticeable".

The AAD lists fine lines, dark spots, rough skin, redness and loose skin among the signs red light may help. AAD It calls it "not a one-and-done treatment", because skin keeps ageing.

Photoaging is the skin ageing caused by years of sun. Yale Medicine lists its signs: wrinkles, age spots and freckles, lost elasticity, rough and uneven texture, broken capillaries "usually around the nose and chest", and blotchy redness. Yale Medicine, 2023

Research on red light therapy for photoaging measures these visible signs. In one study of 31 people with facial wrinkles, 52% had a 25 to 50% improvement in photoaging scores by week 12 after 9 sessions of 633 and 830 nm light. Russell, 2005

The AAD adds that daily sun protection can help prevent, slow and even reverse signs of sun damage. AAD, sun-damaged skin This article covers long-term damage. For a fresh burn, see red light therapy for sunburn.

Which signs of photoaging does red light have data for?

Fine lines and rough texture have the most data, followed by uneven tone. Single sun spots and broken capillaries have the least.

Sign of sun damage What the light studies found Strength of data
Fine lines and wrinkles Up to 36% fewer wrinkles (sham-controlled); about 30% less wrinkle volume around the eyes Best supported
Rough texture Smoother skin than an untreated group; cheek roughness down 23.8% Moderate
Uneven tone, blotchiness Tone evenness improved 34.9%; less pigmentation and redness in 90% Early, small studies
Loss of firmness Elasticity up by up to 19%; results vary between trials Mixed
Sun spots (age spots) Not measured one by one; lighter dark spots reported Limited; get spots checked
Rough, scaly patches A doctor's question, not a home light one See a dermatologist

The wrinkle volume figure comes from a split-face trial of 137 women with photoaged skin. Mota, 2023 Ten sessions over 4 weeks cut wrinkle volume by 31.6% with 660 nm red and by 29.9% with 590 nm amber.

In a 2014 study of 128 adults, roughness fell by 1.79 after 30 red light sessions. Wunsch and Matuschka, 2014 In the untreated group it rose by 0.95, which the authors linked to season and sun exposure.

Most of these studies were small. For collagen and firmness, see our guide to red light therapy for collagen.

Will red light fade sun spots and age spots on the face?

Red light may even out overall tone a little, but it is not a spot remover. For fading individual spots, dermatologists use IPL, lasers, freezing or prescription creams.

The 90-person amber study recorded less pigmentation overall, and the AAD mentions lighter dark spots in its summary of that work. Mayo Clinic lists laser and IPL, typically 2 to 3 sessions, plus hydroquinone creams, cryotherapy and peels. Mayo Clinic, 2025

Harvard Health says "Age spots do not need to be treated." Harvard Health, age spots It still advises showing any skin change to a doctor. Mayo notes that a biopsy can tell an age spot from lentigo maligna, a type of skin cancer.

For melasma, acne marks and which wavelengths affect pigment, see red light therapy for hyperpigmentation.

Which works better for sun-damaged skin, red or near-infrared?

Both help, in different ways. In the 2007 split-face trial, red did better for blemishes and dark stains, near-infrared did better for elasticity and wrinkles, and the authors recommended combining them.

That summary comes from a 2024 review of light and skin. Hernández-Bule, 2024 Other trials found red and amber, or red and broadband light, gave similar results.

What about the sun's own infrared? One study found raised MMP-1, an enzyme that breaks down collagen, in about two-thirds of people exposed to infrared A. Dermatology Times, 2012

A 2016 review points out that those lab sources were unlike sunlight: "It is essentially a question of intensity." Barolet, 2016 The 2024 review adds that red and near-infrared light "do not seem to induce DNA damage", and the photoaging trials using 830 to 850 nm found improvement.

How long does red light take to improve sun-damaged skin?

Expect the first changes around week 4, a fair judgement at week 8 and the biggest change by about month 3. Some reviews say the full effect can take up to six months.

A 12-week mask study of 20 adults, with no control group, tracked progress. Results held 28 days after stopping.

  • Week 4: cheek roughness down 6.8%; tone not yet changed.
  • Week 8: roughness down 18.2%; tone evenness improved 32.7%.
  • Week 12: roughness down 23.8%; tone evenness improved 34.9%.

In a smaller study of 13 people given nine sessions over 5 weeks, 91% reported better skin tone at 12 weeks. Baez and Reilly, 2007

Harvard Health says devices need use "multiple times a week for four to six months". Harvard Health, 2025 Creams take time too: on sun-damaged forearms, tretinoin improved roughness at a median of 12 weeks and mottled pigment at 16 weeks. Andreano, 1993

Take photos at weeks 0, 4, 8 and 12 in the same light.

What settings did the photoaging trials use?

Most used red light, often with near-infrared, about twice a week for 4 to 16 weeks. Doses varied widely, and no single dose has been shown to be best.

Study Area Light Dose per session Minutes Schedule
Weiss 2005 (90 people) Face 590 nm amber, pulsed 0.1 J/cm² Not given 8 sessions in 4 weeks
Lee 2007 (76, sham) Face, split 633 nm, 830 nm, or both Not given Not given Twice a week, 4 weeks
Russell 2005 (31) Face 633 + 830 nm 126 + 66 J/cm² Not given 9 sessions
Baez 2007 (13) Face 633 + 830 nm 126 + 66 J/cm² 20 9 sessions in 5 weeks
Wunsch 2014 (128) Face and décolletage, or full body 611 to 650 nm red About 9 J/cm² of red 12 to 25 Twice a week, 30 sessions
Couturaud 2023 (20) Face, mask 630 nm 15.6 J/cm² 12 Twice a week, 3 months
Mota 2023 (137) Around the eyes 660 nm or 590 nm 3.8 J/cm² Not given 10 sessions in 4 weeks
Lee 2021 (30) Neck 630 + 850 nm Not given (25 mW/cm² irradiance) 9 Daily, 16 weeks

Can red light help sun damage on the neck, chest, forearms and hands?

The closest evidence comes from a neck study and from light units that covered the face and décolletage. A face mask does not reach these areas; a panel does.

In the neck study, 30 women used a home device with 630 and 850 nm light for 9 minutes a day for 16 weeks. Lee, 2021 Neck wrinkles fell and stayed below the starting level 8 weeks after they stopped. Elasticity and skin density rose. See red light therapy for the neck.

Harvard Health says age spots are most common on the hands. The best-tested option for sun-damaged forearms is tretinoin: in a 48-week trial of 40 people, 97% of treated arms improved. A panel at 12 inches can light both forearms and the backs of the hands in one session; see red light therapy for hands and feet.

Should you get rough, scaly spots checked before using red light?

Yes. A rough, scaly patch may be an actinic keratosis, a sun-damage growth that needs a doctor rather than light at home.

The NHS says these patches can feel "like sandpaper", are usually 1 to 2 cm across, and appear on the face, hands, arms, ears, scalp and legs. NHS See a GP if a patch:

  • Is new, or bleeds, grows or changes colour.
  • Becomes tender or turns into a lump.
  • Appears on the lips.

Clinics treat these patches with freezing, creams, peels or photodynamic therapy (PDT). PDT is not home red light: a light-sensitising solution stays on the skin for 60 to 90 minutes before blue or red light is applied, and patients then avoid daylight outdoors for 48 hours.

Can you use red light with sunscreen and tretinoin or retinol?

Yes, in a set order: light first on clean, bare skin, then skincare, then sunscreen in the morning. Each has its own evidence, and daily sunscreen has the strongest.

In the 903-adult trial, daily sunscreen for 4.5 years left skin ageing 24% lower than occasional use. Red light gives no UV protection.

  • Sunscreen: the AAD advises broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher, at least 1 teaspoon for the face, applied 15 minutes before going out and reapplied about every 2 hours. AAD, sunscreen FAQs
  • UK: the NHS advises at least SPF 30 with at least 4-star UVA protection. NHS, sunscreen

Tretinoin is a proven treatment for photodamage. In a 24-week trial of 296 people, 68% improved on 0.05% tretinoin against 43% on a plain cream. Olsen, 1992 It can redden skin, so skip light sessions while a retinoid has left skin red, raw or peeling. Our guide to red light mask vs retinol covers the routine.

Our precautions rule out use with photosensitising medication, so if you take any medicine, check with your pharmacist or doctor before using the device.

Is red light suitable for sun-damaged skin with a darker tone?

Start with a dermatologist and low settings. The AAD says darker skin is "more sensitive to visible light", and dark spots that follow can be more intense and longer-lasting.

Harvard Health advises starting with lower doses. The 2024 review found the highest red light dose skin tolerated could differ by up to 50% between people.

  • Mask: use the red mode, which has no blue light, at 50% to start.
  • Panel: our precautions advise against the panel for Fitzpatrick skin types V and VI.
  • Sunscreen: the AAD suggests tinted sunscreen with iron oxide, "particularly for people with darker skin tones".

How do you use the Kivorla mask and panel for sun-damaged skin?

Use the mask for the face and the panel for the neck, chest, forearms and backs of the hands. Start gentle, about twice a week, as most photoaging trials did.

Have any rough, scaly or changing spot checked first. Skip broken skin and do not use the panel if you have had sunburn on your body in the past 2 weeks.

The 4-Wavelength Red Light Therapy Mask is a full-face silicone shell with an eye opening and no diodes over the eyes. The red mode combines 665 nm red with 850 and 1064 nm near-infrared, pairing red with near-infrared as the 633 and 830 nm trials did. Brightness is 50, 70 or 90%, and the timer 5, 10 or 15 minutes.

  • Week 1: on clean, dry skin, the red mode at 50%. Use the 5-minute timer if your skin reacts or marks easily, otherwise 10 minutes.
  • Then: move to 70% or 90%, 2 to 4 sessions a week, while skin stays calm.
  • Limits: the manual allows 10 minutes up to 4 times a week at high brightness, or 15 minutes up to 3 times a week, and no more than 20 minutes a day.
  • Blue mode: its 460 nm blue is for breakouts, not for sun-damaged or pigment-prone skin.

The 9-Spectrum Red Light Therapy Panel carries 480, 590, 630, 660, 670, 810, 830, 850 and 1060 nm, each dimmable from 1 to 100%. Its 590, 630, 660, 830 and 850 nm channels match the trial wavelengths. It hangs on a door or wall with the included door hook, pulley, hanging cables and screws, or stands upright on the floor. Goggles and a controller come in the box.

  • Chest and neck: hang the panel level with the upper chest, about 12 inches away, chin slightly raised.
  • Forearms and hands: rest your arms in front of the panel at about 12 inches, palms down.
  • Brightness: the mask study used a gentle 21.7 mW/cm² for 12 minutes, so dim each wavelength well below 100% to stay near that range. For pigment-prone skin, set 480 nm to its lowest setting.
  • Timer: from 1 minute; work towards 10 to 15 minutes per area.
  • Spacing: leave at least 6 hours between 30-minute sessions, and wear the goggles.

Keep the same settings for 8 to 12 weeks and compare photos.
